Danny Silva Hospitalized After Pulmonary Embolism

UFC featherweight Danny Silva was hospitalized after suffering a pulmonary embolism that doctors said kills half of those affected.

Silva revealed Monday on social media that he had been training through what he thought was a rib injury for two weeks before his body began shutting down during a three-mile run. Swelling in his neck and chest sent him to the emergency room, where scans found a massive blood clot in a neck vein that had partially broken off and traveled to his lung, according to MMA Mania.

The 28-year-old spent three nights in the hospital and is now on medication for several months. "They told me 50% of people don't make it," Silva wrote. "The fact that I was training, sparring, and pushing myself may have saved my life. Because I'm in such good shape I was able to survive."

Silva had sparred and completed sprint work the Friday before his hospitalization. His team used cupping and scraping to address what they believed was a rib problem and arm pain. He continued pushing through the discomfort until his body crashed on the run.

The Cub Swanson trainee is 3-1 in the UFC, most recently stopping undefeated Kurtis Campbell via second-round knockout in his last appearance. His only loss came against top contender Kevin Vallejos. Silva's return date is uncertain while he completes his treatment protocol.
