Crawford Still Wants The Canelo Fight – ‘I’m Looking For Mega-Fights'
Terence Crawford has doubled down on his desire to fight Canelo Alvarez at super middleweight.
Following Crawford’s win over Errol Spence Jr, which made him the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era, the boxer was keen on facing the Mexican. This would require him to move up three weight classes in order to make it happen for the right to fight for the undisputed title at 168. But before that can even happen, Crawford must overcome Spence in their rematch. The boxer has exercised his rematch clause, with the fight date and weight class yet to be agreed. However, once Spence was dealt with, Crawford only had eyes on Canelo.
Crawford Wants Canelo
“Man, that [a Canelo fight] would be lovely. That would definitely be lovely. Listen, like I said. Jaron [Boots Ennis] is in one place, and I’m in another. I’m looking for mega-fights right now, and right now, that’s not a mega-fight. That’s my standpoint on it. I’m looking to fight guys like Canelo. That’s pretty much it, man, and a rematch with Spence, and that’s it. That’s over with for me," Crawford said
Crawford’s Other Options
This naturally begs the question: Is the fight possible? As of now, Canelo has distanced himself from the fight as the focus appears to be elsewhere. A fight between Canelo and David Benavidez is the fight that the boxing fanbase wants. Meanwhile, facing Crawford may not go down well since Jermell Charlo moved up two weight classes, and the fight with Alvarez failed to be competitive. That is likely to be a big factor going forward since Crawford has ruled out a fight with Charlo.
The pair were initially linked with fighting each other since it would have allowed Crawford to become undisputed at 154. But since then, Charlo has been stripped of his WBO title as Tim Tszyu became the full champion after Charlo failed to defend his belt against the Australian. Not only that, but Charlo has vacated his IBF belt since then. And given that Charlo did not put in a competitive fight against Canelo, Crawford has ruled out a fight with Jermell.
"[Jermell] Charlo isn’t a mega-fight. His last performance wasn’t a great performance. Winning," Crawford revealed
Expectations
Despite this being the case, Crawford was confident that the Canelo fight could get made. This was on the grounds that if the financials made sense in the fight, then it would happen. Boxing has shown this with the rise of crossover fights, given that high demand can make it happen. Francis Ngannou’s fight with Tyson Fury had shown that, as it did go ahead and was competitive. With that being said, Crawford had this to say.
"I think business talks. When the right business comes across the table it’ll happen. I just be talking, you know what I mean? Canelo’s a big dude. But at the same time I still believe in my abilities. He’s a heavy dude but he’s not a big guy. He’s 5′ 8″, I’m 5′ 8″. My arms longer than his. That fight would be good."You’re gonna get hit in a fight, that’s one thing we all know, and I believe in myself and my abilities that I can handle anything a fighter throws at me. I gotta be able to believe in myself if I’m gonna get in the ring … I wouldn’t even entertain a fight if it would be where I couldn’t hold up … like Deontay Wilder or something like that," Crawford stated
