Covington On What Could Bring Him Back To UFC
Colby Covington would consider an MMA comeback only if the UFC offers him a marquee opponent who can justify the grind of fight camp.
The former welterweight contender outlined his conditions for a return in a recent interview, per BJ Penn, saying he needs a matchup that matters for his career résumé and provides genuine motivation. "If there's a big fight that adds to my legacy and can get me excited," Covington said, that would be enough to bring him back.
McGregor And Diaz Top Covington's Wishlist
Covington named Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz as dream opponents, though he doubts the promotion would give him either fight. He wants someone who has built their name over years in the sport rather than a rising contender. The 39-year-old said he remains selective about which bouts make sense at this stage of his career.
Covington cited his recent grappling win over Arman Tsarukyan at RAF as evidence he could still hang with top-tier competition. The lightweight contender is eight years younger but could not solve Covington's wrestling during their match. Covington said that performance proves he could return to the UFC cage if the right name surfaces.
The welterweight has stayed active in grappling since parting ways with the promotion. He told media the door remains open for an octagon return as long as the opponent fits his criteria.
