Charlo Wants The Crawford Fight, Bivol Wants Charlo And More
Jermell Charlo has put Terence Crawford on notice by demanding a fight with him following his bout with Canelo Alvarez on September 30th, 2023.
The undisputed junior middleweight champion will jump up two weight divisions in order to take on Alvarez for his undisputed super middleweight titles.
And as part of that process, Crawford has spoken about facing the winner. Therefore, if Charlo were to desire such a fight, then it would only make sense for Crawford to do so if he were victorious against Canelo.
After all, given that Charlo will be stripped of his WBO belt at 154 once his fight with Canelo begins, Crawford has less incentive to face him unless he has all the belts at 168.
And since Tim Tszyu will become the full WBO champion at 154, Charlo would not offer the chance to Bud to become undisputed unless he beats Canelo. Regardless of what the case may be, Charlo was eager to face Bud.
Charlo On Crawford
"Don’t write a check your a** can’t cash. I’m one of those ones. You got to face me. I got to see what you on. It’s a pilot on a stove. When you light that stove a bunch of times, it boof. It bursts out. So sometimes, I just hold back and allow it to idle in a position. When I get done with this one [Canelo Alvarez], I’m going to move on to that situation. I’ll take care of everybody I got to take care of," Charlo
Nevertheless, there is a chance that the fight does not happen. If Canelo were to come up short, then there is a chance that there would be a rematch clause in place.
As such, Crawford would have to wait longer in order to see the outcome of the fight. And in any event, Charlo’s intentions at that point may no longer be the same.
This is due to the fact that two losses in a row, against Canelo and then potentially Crawford, would harm his career moving forward. And there is no getting away from that.
Bivol On Charlo
Much in the same way, Dmitry Bivol has admitted that he wants Charlo if he overcomes Alvarez.
Prior to Canelo agreeing to fight Charlo, there were talks of a rematch with Bivol. However, talks broke down due to the disagreements over the weight.
Canelo reportedly wanted the bout at 175 in order to avenge the loss he suffered at light heavyweight. This would have removed any doubt over a victory by dismissing claims that Bivol was drained at 168.
Meanwhile, Bivol was intent on fighting Canelo at 168 in order to grab all of this titles. After all, facing Canelo at 175 offered the star nothing since he had beaten him so comprehensively.
With that being said, Charlo could become a realistic possibility moving forward.
"Yeah, if [Jermell] Charlo wins [against Canelo Alvarez], I would like to fight him. It’s not like, ‘Oh, I want to fight against someone at 168.’ No, I prefer to fight in my weight class [light heavyweight].
"If someone wants and we have a good offer to move down for [super middleweight] belt, I will do it, but I prefer to fight in my weight class. I see that he [Canelo] will move forward and try to finish him with one or two punches. Charlo will try to keep him on the distance and try to move," Bivol
The Charlo Brothers
Outside of the fight game, Charlo also opened up on his relationship with his brother, Jermall Charlo. The latter has been out of the ring since 2021 after suffering from personal and mental health issues.
But given that he is aiming to make a return this year, it is vital that both brothers are on board when it comes to back each other up.
However, Jermell admitted that their relationship has not always been easy. His following comments confirmed as much.
"I get to a point where, ‘Oh that’s your brother, bro. I get tired of that sh!t too.’ But then I still gotta be like hey we call gotta forgive, we all gotta be on the same page. I try not to have any resentment or any of that type of sh!t going on. I don’t envy him at all. I’m doing my thing in boxing, he’s doing his thing. Look at me right now. I’m going up to 168 in a position that he should’ve been in," Jermell
