Charlo Dismisses The Idea Of A Tszyu Fight
Jermell Charlo has given his take on a possible fight with Tim Tszyu.
Charlo is currently getting ready to face Canelo Alvarez, as the undisputed champion at 154 moves up two-weight classes to face the Mexican.
And in the process of doing so, Jermell has the chance to make history by becoming undisputed at 168 pounds.
Canelo is the heavy favorite, as many were shocked that Charlo took the fight. After all, he has plenty to keep himself occupied with at 154.
He was set to face Tszyu in January, as the Australian is his WBO mandatory. Although that may have been the case, Charlo suffered a hand injury.
That took longer to heal as a new date could not be agreed. But since then, Jermell has moved up for Canelo, leaving many wondering what happens at 154. With that being said, this is what Charlo had to say.
"I know Tim Tszyu was my [mandatory] challenger. But he does nothing for my career. He still needs to build up himself, build up his career. I’m cool with that. But I was down to fight him anyway.
"Then we ran into the injury, and now it’s like—we get an opportunity like this, we’re gonna go ahead and take that. One thing, I’m not done yet at 154. But I’m fittin’ to go catch that crown. Roy [Jones, Hall of Fame four-division titlist] was able to move up and down. It’s my turn now," Charlo
Naturally, the chances of this fight happening depend on the bout with Canelo. If Charlo were to come out victorious, then a rematch will most likely take place. That would keep Jermell at 168.
Meanwhile, losing to Canelo would not damage Charlo’s legacy. However, the American may not want to jump in with a hungry Tszyu.
And in any event, with Terence Crawford potentially moving up, a fight with Bud may make more sense. So far now, Jermell has many options to keep himself entertained which may serve as better options than Tszyu.
