Canelo Is Not Ducking Benavidez – Says Eddie Hearn
Eddie Hearn has dismissed suggestions that Canelo Alvarez is ducking David Benavidez.
The Mexican recently left his working relationship with DAZN in order to sign a three-fight deal with the PBC.
However, his first fight ended up being against Jermell Charlo, much to the disappointment of fans who demanded the ‘Mexican Monster.’
This was in addition to the news that Benavidez’s team had sent an offer to Canelo’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso, which had not been acknowledged.
However, Hearn refused to fire shots at Canelo by stating that Dmitry Bivol was a much tougher proposition.
The latter comprehensively beat Alvarez at light-heavyweight, but a rematch could not get agreed due to differences over the weight class. And it is that fight which has apparently troubled the Mexican.
"He has no problem fighting Benavidez. But what he really wants is to defeat Dmitry Bivol and he would like to steal his belt at 175 pounds. That is a much bigger challenge to him," Hearn
Nevertheless, those comments have to be read into a broader context. Another loss to Bivol at 175 would not harm Canelo’s legacy, given that he would still retain his status as undisputed champion at 168 lbs.
Not only that, but a loss to Benavidez would live long in the memory since it would define the country’s best fighter. And that is something that Canelo’s former opponent, Floyd Mayweather, put forward.
“CANELO IS DUCKING BENAVIDEZ”

"If it was up to me, we want to see Benavidez. Canelo’s a hell of a fighter, but in my personal opinion, he’s ducking Benavidez. This is my personal opinion, and I’m allowed to speak my mind," Mayweather
Despite this being the case, Canelo’s legacy does speak for itself. The Mexican is a four-division champion, who has faced the very best including Mayweather and GGG.
That has given the star the right to pick and choose the fights that favor his career, something which Mayweather had done so successfully.
But the question remaining is would Canelo’s legacy be tainted without a bout against Benavidez. Time will tell moving forward.
