Canelo Alvarez dropped Edgar Berlanga to retain his unified middleweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super middleweight titles via a unanimous decision.

Both boxers gave a good account of themselves, as Berlanga showed huge heart to make it to the final bell. Canelo dominated the center, as he caught Berlanga with numerous hooks in the first. Berlanga was staying on the outside with his jab. Canelo was consistently hitting the body in the second. The Mexican hit Berlanga with a combination on his back, but the challenger returned with a low blow, forcing the referee to issue a warning.

Canelo Drops Berlanga

Canelo was cranking up the pressure, which showed in the third. He had Berlanga on the ropes and dropped him with a vicious left hook that sent him to the canvas. Berlanga got up but clapped his gloves in anger.

The challenger grew frustrated as the referee intervened once again after both men threw during the break in the clinch in the fifth. Berlanga was behind on the scorecards and needed to switch things up going into the second half of the bout.

However, Canelo still applied the pressure. A solid right hook landed in the ninth round. Berlanga lowered his hands while his distance control was less measured, allowing Canelo to close the gap. Berlanga’s camp allowed their man to continue at the end of the ninth, but it was now damage control. Berlanga caught Canelo flush with a hook after the Mexican turned his back in the tenth.

Berlanga’s Moment

Berlanga required a knockout. Both men left everything in the ring, but it was Canelo who walked out with a win on the cards: 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109. The two fighters showed respect by hugging each other, much to the applause of the crowd.

Post-Fight

"I did good. Now what are they gonna say? I fight younger fighters; before they say I only fight older fighters. They always talk. I’m the best fighter in the world. He said he respects me, I’m his idol. He said he feels bad for the way he acted. But you know, he did good. With adrenaline, I got a little angry. I’m Mexican, man. Viva Mexico, cabrones. I’m gonna rest, enjoy my family now, and then I’m gonna decide," Canelo
