Boxxer Signs A Deal With The BBC – What Does It Mean?

Boxxer has inked a broadcasting deal with the BBC, raising serious question marks over its future. 

The news follows on the back end of Ben Shalom and Boxxer’s four-year deal with Sky Sports coming to an end. This was also after their NBC Universal/Peacock deal ended this year, raising doubts over the promotion. The new deal will see the BBC showing fights later this year on BBC Two or Three, iPlayer, and the BBC Sport website. 

"Full details of the first fight, undercard and BBC Sport presenting team will be announced in the coming weeks. Selected undercard fights, features and behind-the-scenes content will also be available across BBC iPlayer."

The news of Boxxer’s new deal presents a significant step down from the lucrative position they held with Sky Sports. Sky’s PPV model and established reputation meant bigger budgets and more opportunities for major events. Fighters could earn substantial purses and gain immense exposure. Moving to a public broadcaster like the BBC, which operates on a free-to-air model, dramatically changes the financial landscape. Without the revenue generated from PPV, the potential for massive purses is reduced.

The move to the BBC also raises concerns about the scale and frequency of shows. A public broadcaster’s schedule is often more restrictive and less focused on boxing compared to a dedicated sports channel like Sky Sports. There is a risk that Boxxer’s events might be fewer in number or relegated to less desirable slots, impacting the development of their fighters.
