Boots Ennis calls himself a 'variety bag' after 154-pound title win
Jaron 'Boots' Ennis has a simple way to describe what he brings to the ring: variety.
After his welterweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super welterweight title victory that added a second belt to his collection, Ennis sat down with Ring Magazine to discuss his career trajectory and what defines him as a fighter. Bad Left Hook covered the remarks in detail, highlighting his family ties and his path forward at 154 pounds.
Ennis on his versatile approach and family influence
"I feel like I'm a variety bag of chips. Whatever you want, you have," Ennis said, per the Ring interview. He pointed to his recent performances as proof — a first-round knockout in one fight, slick movement against Eimantas Stanionis in another, and aggressive work in his latest outing. Coming from a fighting family helps. Both his brothers and his father competed at a high level, and Ennis said he trusts their eyes. "Whatever they say, I do. Because I know they see something I can't see."
He addressed the ongoing talk about a potential Vergil Ortiz matchup, noting he trained for that fight starting in January only to have the opponent changed multiple times before landing on Zayas. "Right now my task is belts," he said. "I got two belts in this division and my goal is to be undisputed and that's what I'm going to do."
On Terence Crawford, who recently threw some shade his way, Ennis was diplomatic. He said Crawford can retire happily and pointed out that the welterweight legend acknowledged it was now "the Boots' era." Ennis admitted he wanted fights with Crawford, Errol Spence, Keith Thurman, and Shawn Porter when they were at their peak, but was told he was high risk and low reward. He said he has no regrets. "Perfect timing," he added.
Ennis faces a crowded field at 154 pounds as he chases the remaining belts.
