Benavidez Confirms Cieslak Fight Before Usyk Pursuit
David Benavidez will face WBC interim cruiserweight champion Michal Cieslak in a title unification bout on Dec. 5 in Phoenix, per Ring Magazine, wrapping up his current contract before targeting the three-fight run he recently mapped out against Oleksandr Usyk, Artur Beterbiev, and Jai Opetaia.
Cieslak carries a seven-fight streak into the matchup and owns a 28-2-1 record with 22 knockouts. The Polish titlist stopped Jean Pascal over a year ago to claim the WBC strap, but Benavidez represents a sharp jump in opposition. The undefeated Mexican holds the WBA and WBO cruiserweight belts and sits atop most pound-for-pound lists at 32-0 with 26 stoppages. He previously ruled at middleweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super middleweight and heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight before moving up in weight.
Ortiz Targets Thurman In Co-Main Event
Vergil Ortiz Jr. will defend his WBC interim welterweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super welterweight title in the co-feature against Keith Thurman, who dropped a knockout decision to Sebastian Fundora in his most recent outing. Ortiz, unbeaten at 24-0 with 22 knockouts, is chasing a statement win that would position him for bigger fights against Fundora or Jaron Ennis, the division's top names.
The Phoenix card marks the final obligation under Benavidez's existing promotional deal. His next move likely hinges on how quickly he handles Cieslak and whether the heavyweight and cruiserweight landscape opens up for the matchups he has been targeting since the summer.
