Apodaca On Work Call After Historic DWCS Upset

Alex Apodaca logged onto a work call at 7:30 a.m. the day after pulling off the biggest upset in Dana White's Contender Series history.

The 32-year-old bantamweight defeated heavily favored Bella Mir over three rounds Aug. 25 to earn a UFC contract, but told reporters at the post-fight press conference that celebration would have to wait. "I am gonna party my *ss off, but I have work in the morning. I have a call at like 7:30 a.m.," she said, per Sherdog.

Apodaca Keeping Accounting Career Alongside UFC Contract

Apodaca works full-time as a consultant at an accounting firm and has no plans to quit despite the promotion. She said balancing fight camps and weight cuts with video calls has required flexibility from her employer. "I'll be on video calls with a black eye and they are totally just used to it now," she told reporters.

The new UFC signee credited her co-workers and bosses for supporting the dual career path. "I actually don't think I'm just gonna quit," Apodaca said. "I think I'm gonna keep doing it. I like using my brain, so I'm gonna keep doing it."

Mir closed as a minus-6000 favourite on some sportsbooks. Apodaca's decision win marked Week 3 of DWCS Season 10.
