Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury talks continue with no venue set
The Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury super-fight remains in limbo with no confirmed venue, date or promotional structure, Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh said this week.
Alalshikh, who is bankrolling the heavyweight showdown, took to social media to push back against reports that details had been finalized. "Till now I have not decided yet where the fight will take place and [who] will work with me… some ppl are making up stories about it," he wrote, per BoxingScene. "If you want to know the facts take it from me or [The Ring]. If you want to waste your time listen to others."
Conflicting contract terms and promotional tension
Joshua is scheduled to face Kristian Prenga on July 25 as a warm-up. Fury's interim opponent has not been announced despite talk of an August 1 date in Ireland. Matchroom's Eddie Hearn and Queensberry's Frank Warren have grown frustrated with Dana White and Zuffa Boxing making public comments about a fight between their respective fighters. BoxingScene reports that Joshua signed a contract calling for a November bout in the UK with Zuffa barred as lead promoter, while Fury agreed to different terms on date and location with clauses preventing either Zuffa or Matchroom from serving as lead.
Warren acknowledged broadcast exclusivity may force both Queensberry and Matchroom to step back if Netflix lands the fight, as both promoters are tied to DAZN. London was considered the frontrunner to host, but weather concerns and other logistics have left Vegas and other markets in play. A summit involving all stakeholders is being planned to resolve the outstanding issues.
Warren said over the weekend that no final determination on venue or date will happen until that meeting takes place.
