Moses Itauma: Boxing's Best Heavyweight Prospect

Moses Itauma is considered one of the most exciting heavyweights in the sport and is seen as a future heavyweight champion.

The 19-year-old was born in Kezmarok, Slovakia, but also has English roots. He moved to England in 2008, giving him a varied upbringing. He is currently undefeated with a 10-0 record. Eight of his wins have come by way of knockouts. He has six KO wins in a row, having boxed on the biggest stage. He fought on the Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk card this year during their Undisputed Heavyweight Championship. He knocked out Ilja Mezencev in the second round. His last bout was a KO win over Mariusz Wach. If Moses continues his impressive rise, he could become the youngest heavyweight champion ever.

Itauma’s Rise

Mike Tyson, who became world champion at 20 years old, holds the current record. Itauma will become 20 on May 19, 2025, meaning time is running out. Itauma’s favorite boxer is Prince Naseem Hamed. Moses has stated that he tries to model his boxing on Hamed’s style. That would require him to have quick reflexes, blistering hand speed and quality footwork, which is rare for heavyweights. Moses had a respectable amateur career, even if it was short compared to most fighters.

He had 24 fights and won 11 of those by knockout. Moses picked up gold medals in various forms, including at Schools, Juniors, Youth European and the Heavyweight Youth World. He is currently signed to Frank Warren under Queensbury Promotions. His talent has been recognized with Tyson Fury praising his skills. Itauma will spar with Fury for his upcoming fight against Usyk. Fury lost the first fight as Usyk became the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion. The rematch will take place on December 21 as Fury seeks to avenge the first loss of his career. His southpaw stance will be perfect for Fury to mimic Usyk’s style.

“I’ve got my own fight to think about. We’re kind of similar styles, the likes of me and Usyk, we’ve kind of got a similar style so I feel like I’ll be very beneficial for [Fury]. “It just compliments me. It compliments me but listen, I’m not going to go there just to help him. I want to gauge my ability off his ability. Obviously I’m looking forward to [that],” Itauma said

Perception

Ben Davidson currently trains Itauma. Davidson has worked with some of the best heavyweights in the business. He helped Tyson Fury bounce back from his mental health struggles, resulting in a draw with Deontay Wilder in their first fight. Davidson currently works with Anthony Joshua. While Daniel Dubois knocked out Joshua in his last fight, AJ had shown improvement before that, stopping Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou. Moses will face Demsey McKean, his toughest fight, on December 21. Davidson talked up Moses as one of the most exciting prospects.

“He’s a very smart, intelligent fighter. He’s a thinking fighter. At his age a lot of it is instinct. Our job is to make it very conscious so when he comes across another fighter with a high IQ, he’s able to process, he’s able to have answers for whatever questions they’re asking back of him. He’s able to recognise traps that better opponents are trying to set on him. I feel like his progress is quick. I know sometimes he plays it down but he really loves the sport. He’s got a lot of passion for it and he’s really exciting,” Davidson stated
