David Morrell Jr. has plans on becoming the undisputed champion at 175 pounds.

The 27-year-old suffered his first professional defeat in a clash with David Benavidez in February 2025, losing a unanimous decision at 175. He attempted to rebound in July 2025 against Imam Khataev, and while he walked away with a split-decision victory, the performance was far from dominant. Morrell was rocked early and forced to fight on the back foot.

In response, Morrell parted ways with longtime trainer Ronnie Shields to work with Ismael Salas. Morrell described the split as a “necessary evolution” rather than a reflection of dissatisfaction, stating he needs a “new voice.” The immediate obstacle in Morrell’s path is a WBO-ordered interim title fight against Callum Smith. While an agreement was reportedly reached in December to avoid a purse bid, talks have stalled. Morrell is also keen on running things back with Benavidez.

“Originally that fight was scheduled for March in Riyadh. We don’t know, obviously with the AJ situation, what’s happening about that date or that show. Myself, (Morrell manager) Luis DeCubas, we’re working very hard to establish where [Smith-Morrell] will take place. We need to make sure that fight happens sooner rather than later,” Eddie Hearn said

Morrell Reacts

“2026 is going to be my year. I want to fight for undisputed world titles at 175 pounds. First comes an important fight, possibly against Callum Smith or someone at that level. I decided to change trainers because I needed a new voice in my corner, someone who would understand me better right now. Ronnie did an excellent job for many years.

“The time came to evolve and correct details I saw in my last fights, especially in defense and handling pressure. I want to be smarter, not just rely on power. With Salas, we’re polishing all of that to be ready for the big names. A lot of people are asking for the rematch. If he decides to stay at light heavyweight, of course, I’d love it. I learned a lot from that fight. It would be a different war,” Morrell said
