MMA fighter Isaac Johnson has passed away at the age of 31 following an injury sustained during a bout against Mario Aleksandrovski at the Matador Fighter Challenge on November 21.

The incident occurred in the third round, where Johnson suffered a critical injury that required him to go to the hospital at 8:38 p.m. Despite medical efforts, Johnson was pronounced dead in the early hours of the next day, November 22, at 12:01 a.m. The fight was reportedly Johnson’s first Thai boxing match. Authorities and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office have launched an investigation into the cause and manner of death. An autopsy has not yet been conducted to determine the exact cause of Johnson’s death.

“I have no words to express how I feel right now… One of the fighters at our event, Isaac Johnson, collapsed towards the end of his fight. The medical staff on hand provided medical attention and he was transported to hospital. At around 1:30 a.m. this morning I was informed that he did not survive. I have no words to express how I feel right now; I can only express my sincere condolences to his family, friends and teammates. We will know more when the medical report is released,” Joe Goyita (event promoter)

Prevention

This event highlights the inherent risks in combat sports, as we look at what can be done. All fighters could be required to undergo annual, comprehensive neurological and cardiovascular screenings. For fighters competing in a specific discipline for the first time, such as Johnson’s first Thai boxing match, promoters could be held to a higher standard of matching opponents.

The rules could mandate that fighters cannot be cleared to fight in a new discipline unless they provide proof of sufficient, structured training in that style. Furthermore, regulatory bodies must rigorously vet the quality and experience level of opponents to prevent dangerous mismatches.

Referees and cornermen could undergo specialized training on recognizing subtle signs of critical neurological injury and be empowered to stop a fight based on these observations, even against the fighter’s or corner’s protest. A referee should be trained to immediately call a time-out if a fighter exhibits post-concussion symptoms, regardless of whether a knockdown was scored.
