Makhachev Broke Poirier's Nose, Ribs And ACL

Dustin Poirier suffered several injuries in his UFC 302 loss to Islam Makhachev

Dustin missed out on a title once again, as Islam submitted him in the last round. The victory meant Makhachev retained his Undisputed Lightweight Title. It was once again difficult for Dustin, given how close he has been to picking up a title. He lost the lightweight belt to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in 2019.

That was followed up by another defeat for the same title against Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 in 2021. Poirier also suffered a loss in his BMF Title fight against Justin Gaethje. The Highlight knocked him out at UFC 291 last year. Before he took to the Octagon against Islam, Poirier admitted this could be his last fight. He did not announce his retirement in the post-fight presser. However, Dustin questioned if he should fight any longer if there were no titles available.

Poirier Reacts

“I mean I know I can compete with the best of these guys. It’s just like if I do fight again, what am I fighting for? Just to fight? I’ve done that 50 times. I don’t know, I got a beautiful girl I love and I gotta see. I think this could be it honestly,” Poirier stated

To make matters worse, Poirier has suffered various injuries. Yves Edwards also claimed Dustin had a rib injury coming into the fight.

“Nose is broken bad, rib is broken and my ACL is partially torn. FIGHT LIFE,” Poirier stated

“The way he performed Saturday night, man, that was super impressive to me and nobody knows this, and he’s probably gonna be like ‘Why did you put that out there’ I know Makhachev wasn’t 100 percent, nobody goes into a fight 100 percent, he hurt his ribs like two weeks before the fight and hadn’t wrestled or grappled for two, two-and-a-half weeks. I probably shouldn’t (say it) but to me, it’s more impressive. Against that guy, like you wrestled against that guy with hut ribs, okay, I’m impressed,” Yves Edwards said

Poirier’s Future

Regardless of what Dustin decides, he has become a massive hit with the fans. He promised them a special walkout song for the Islam fight. Dustin responded to the fans’ demand for ‘Shine Bright Like A Diamond,’ as his walkout captivated the fanbase. He has also developed a reputation for being one of the most exciting fighters.

Losses to Khabib and Oliveira do not diminish his achievements. He has a 2-1 record over Conor McGregor, fights which will define his career once he retires. Once he returned to his hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, the fans flooded him with cheers at the airport. The clip shows Dustin meeting them at the airport, taking time to sign autographs.

“Good to be back home. I haven’t slept seven consecutive days in my own bed since January. I’ve been on the road, traveling, fighting, training. It’s good to be back and I appreciate everybody from Lafayette, coming out here to greet me at the airport, and my family. The support is crazy and it means a lot to me, so thank you, Louisiana,” Poirier said
