Katie Taylor Becomes Undisputed Champion By Avenging Her Loss to Chantelle Cameron

Katie Taylor created history by becoming a two-weight undisputed champion by beating Chantelle Cameron in a majority decision in front of her home fans.
Taylor was looking to avenge her defeat with serious question marks over her future if she had suffered another loss. But things did not start as well as they could have, as Taylor hit the canvas in the opening round. Although that may have been the case, the referee deemed it a slip as the plan early on was clear. Taylor attempted to box, but it was Cameron who landed with her jab and right hand that had proved successful in the first fight.
Taylor Hits The Canvas
In rounds three and four, Cameron attempted to use her physical attributes by attacking Taylor’s body. But in doing so, the two fighters clashed heads, with Cameron coming out worse. A cut above her eye was far from ideal, as Taylor’s quicker hands allowed her to forge a lead. The cut became a source of concern, with the doctor examining it at the start of the fifth. Despite those concerns, the fight continued ahead.
Cameron’s Cut
After the halfway stage, Taylor began to increase her urgency. The increased output was making Cameron uncomfortable, which forced her to respond in kind. Cameron pushed Taylor backwards as she attacked the Irishwoman’s body while she was on the ropes. Taylor, however, remained composed as she continued to time Cameron in the exchanges. Taylor’s tactic of clinching after her combinations worked a treat, which was marked by a three-shot combination in the seventh.
As the fight entered into the latter stages, Cameron refused to back down. The latter connected with a huge uppercut as Taylor slowed down for the first time in the fight. Taylor’s left eye suffered a cut above it, but that forced the Irishwoman to let her combinations go. And as the bell was approaching, both fighters continued to trade. But it was Taylor who took the win as follows: 95-95, 98-92 and 96-94.
Post-Fight Comments
“Two-weight undisputed champion, that sounds very nice. That was the longest six months of my life, waiting for this rematch. All I was thinking about was the rematch. Whoever wrote me off, they obviously don’t know me very well. The last fight, you saw the worst of me and the best of Chantelle. Tonight, you saw the real me, and when I box like that, nobody can beat me. It takes two to tango. Chantelle is a phenomenal fighter and a phenomenal champion, and she deserves everything she gets as well. To have a trilogy would be great respect for both of us. That’s exactly what we both want. She’s a legend herself,” Taylor
“She deserves everything. She made you so proud tonight and made us proud. Katie Taylor is a two-division World Champion in the greatest night in the history of her career. I’ll tell you something now for everybody out there and the Irish government, Croke Park has to happen. It has to happen. She has done everything for this sport and everything for this country.
“She deserves it more than anyone. Next Spring or Summer we will create a main event you will never forget. Honestly, the single greatest nice I’ve experienced in the sport. We got Wembley 90,000, Madison Square Garden Katie Taylor against Amanda Serrano was something I’ll never forget but they doubted her and wrote her off but one thing I knew she wasn’t prepared to let these guys down tonight,” Hearn
