Jorge Masvidal Eyes Florida Senate Run – ‘I Could Make A Real Difference’

Jorge Masvidal has said he wants to run for the Senate and represent Florida.
Masvidal made his name in the UFC by securing the fastest knockout in history by stopping Ben Askren in just five seconds. He also became the first person in the history of the UFC to become the BMF Champion, beating Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in 2019. However, he left the UFC on a poor run of form. He lost his last four bouts, losing to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 in his final appearance.
Since then, he has had one boxing bout. He faced Diaz in a rematch of their UFC 244 clash. Unfortunately, he lost a majority decision. Masvidal has been linked with a return to the UFC. Reports indicate that he could return to the UFC in April. No opponent has been named, leaving question marks over where he will go next. But Masvidal’s ventures could lie out of the UFC, as suggested a run in office.
“I am gratified by the many, many people who have urged me to run in this Special Election, if it happens. I believe I could make a real difference in the State Senate—particularly in fighting the child sex trafficking which we all know is happening in Miami-Dade County, I am honored by the many citizens who are urging me to run if this opportunity presents itself, and I want everyone to know that I am thinking seriously and praying about it,” Masvidal said
Other Attempts
This is not the first time that a UFC fighter has been linked with politics. Tito Ortiz, the former UFC light-heavyweight champion, won a seat in office at the Huntington Beach City Council in 2020. His time as mayor lasted just six months. He then turned his attention to boxing, facing Anderson Silva. Colby Covington and Wanderlei Silva have also expressed their desire recently to enter into the political arena.
Meanwhile, Conor McGregor had previously been linked with the Irish presidency. While those fighters named may have big fanbases, it is a completely different ball game when it comes to politics. Ortiz recalled his experience.
“I ran for this position with hopes to better my community, work on my constituents and give them a voice, making our beautiful city safe and clean. and to ensure a bright future for my children. I was under the illusion that I was in a bipartisan position and that we all had a common goal that our city and our constituents could have. To put it frankly, that’s not the case. From day one I was sworn in, and I was met with hostility and judgment. [The] sole focus of character assassination each and every week with multiple news stories and leaked personal information all of which in hopes to slander and defame my name,” Ortiz said
