John Ryder Targeting GGG, Mungia And Berlanga

John Ryder has opened up about his plans moving forward following his recent loss to Canelo Alvarez

Ryder may have come up short, but the Brit did put in a commendable performance in managing to go the distance with the undisputed super-middleweight champion.

Not only that, but Ryder did it in Mexico in front of a packed-Canelo crowd on Cinco de Mayo weekend. And given the confidence that has emerged, Ryder is targeting the division’s best fighters.

“I’ve gone in there and fought Canelo, who I’m a massive fan of, and Golovkin’s no different. I’ve been a massive fan of him since when I very first turned pro … I’m sure Golovkin’s got a few more miles on the clock, [he’s] a bit older as well.

“[Munguia] – that’s definitely a fight I’d be open to, [as well as] Berlanga…Listen, I want these big fights, at the world level. I’m not willing to drop down just yet,” Ryder

Ryder’s resume is certainly one that has stood the test of time. Victories over former middleweight world champion Daniel Jacobs and a win over Zach Parker cemented his position as a credible name.

And yet, in reality, Ryder will be some way behind the pecking order when it comes to the big fights.

Eddie Hearn is already targeting a mega-clash involving Edgar Berlanga and the undefeated Mexican Jamie Mungia.

Meanwhile, an aging Golovkin may be out of the question given that the Khazak’s future remains unclear.

‘GGG’ officially vacated all his belts at 160 lbs, as question marks emerge over whether he will retire.

Therefore, Ryder’s motivation for fighting outside of a world title may be to secure his future post boxing.

At the age of 34, Ryder is not getting any younger, in spite of his desire to have a few more big fights.

“I think [my reputation massively] rose in boxing, but it taught me a bit about myself as well,” said Ryder. “I’d never been dropped before, never had a broken nose, I faced a lot of new hurdles in that fight [versus Alvarez], but I overcame them. I just look forward to going again, with the opportunity,” Ryder
