Isaac Cruz Mocks Shakur Stevenson, Andy Cruz And More

Isaac Cruz has had a dig at Shakur Stevenson following the latter’s recent introduction to the lightweight division.

Stevenson burst on the scene with his debut at 135 lbs when he stopped Shuichiro Yoshino in the sixth-round in an impressive fashion.

The manner of the performance was something to behold, as Stevenson dropped his opponent on more than one occasion. But going into the bout, Yoshino questioned whether Stevenson had any power.

Although some argued that the referee stopped the bout too early, the fact of the matter is that Yoshino was under a heavy attack without offering much resistance in return.

As a result, Stevenson became the WBC mandatory for the undisputed lightweight champion, Devin Haney.

That did ruffle a few eyebrows since Stevenson has only had one fight at the weight. And yet, he is a two-division champion which does hold some weight.

As a result, Stevenson is targeting a bout with Haney. Although he did turn down an offer of 25 percent to fight the ‘Dream, on the basis that it did not reflect his value, Stevenson has since then contacted the WBC to make the mandatory official.

As a result, Haney has been given until July 21st, 2023, to decide if he will vacate his belts and move up to 140 to fight Regis Prograis, or if he will stay and take on Shakur.

“Friday, July 21st is the deadline for Haney to decide if he’s fighting Prograis or if he’s going to stay in the lightweight division. No [voluntary]. Shakur Stevenson is the mandatory in the lightweight division,” Mauricio Sulaiman WBC President

Cruz On Stevenson

But for all the noise that Stevenson is making, Cruz has not been all that impressed.

“He’s a great fighter but maybe a little bit overvalued. He wants to stroll into this division as if he’s accomplished everything but in reality, he’s got to earn his diligence,” Cruz said

Nevertheless, it is important to bear in mind the following points. Stevenson had claimed that he was looking to fight ‘Pitbull Cruz’ on his first fight in the division.

However, the latter reportedly turned down the bout which could have given the Mexican a chance to settle the score once and for all.

Stevenson’s Prior Comments

Instead, Cruz has been targeting a rematch with Gervonta Davis. But the latter has not shown any willingness to get it on, although Davis’ coach Calvin Ford is open to the idea of running things back.

And yet, Stevenson accused Cruz of ducking him at one point.

“Talking about how Pitbull, the big killer who fought [Gervonta] ‘Tank’ [Davis] and they act like he some type of killer. If he a killer then wussup? Show me you a killa.

“I want to see how much of a killa you is, Pitbull. Like what we talkin’ about?  Oh cool he knocked out an old [Yuriorkis] Gamboa (in April), I don’t care. I’m not Gamboa. You know who I am.”

“They turned down the fight. I don’t want that fight? Yeah, OK. I told you, I turn pits into poodles n—–. I Ain’t worried about s**t. He ain’t no pitbull to me,” Stevenson

Stevenson On Andy Cruz

Although Cruz may not be impressed with Shakur, the latter has seen the progress made by someone else who has caught his attention: step forward Andy Cruz.

His amateur record speaks for itself. Cruz has managed to achieve 140 wins and have just nine losses. And in the process of doing so, Cruz has beaten rising star Keyshawn Davis four times.

That resulted in Cruz winning gold at the 2020 Olympics. Thereafter, Cruz secured himself a deal with Matchroom Boxing and has never looked back since.

“I think he’ll box two or three times this year. Four, five, six fights max before he fights for a world title. He can beat those guys now, honestly.

“I would put him in with Tank now, and I rate these guys unbelievably. It’s so good to have a talent that you know can mix it with them.

“I saw him beat Keyshawn Davis easily. He’s going to start at ten rounds in July. The way that it’s been received by the boxing community, he’s like a god,” Eddie Hearn

And Stevenson has became aware of Cruz, given that he has seen Keyshawn Davis up close who has also impressed him in sparring.

And given that Cruz is targeting some of the biggest names out there, Shakur did give him his props.

“He can fight for sure. He understands boxing,” Stevenson

Shakur is one of the rising stars of boxing, which is why he is often a fighter that is avoided.

He may not sell the biggest number of pay-per-views, but there is no denying that his skillset is up their with the best of them.
