Is Errol Spence Done?

Errol Spence Jr.’s future is still in doubt, as the boxer has not fought since 2023.
Spence is the former Unified Welterweight Champion who suffered the first defeat of his career in his last fight against Terence Crawford. He was stopped in the ninth round as Crawford became the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. Spence hit the canvas three times as Crawford dominated to become the best welterweight of his era. There were talks over a rematch, which could have taken place at 154 pounds.
However, the talks broke down as Crawford eventually moved up to junior middleweight. Spence eventually underwent surgery for cataracts over his right eye as he blamed vision problems for his below-power performance. There were also suggestions that Spence may have struggled to make welterweight, which is why he was pushing for a rematch at 154 pounds.
Since then, Crawford defeated Israil Madrimov to become the WBA Junior Middleweight Champion. He is now expected to face Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds, as he will jump up two weight classes. Spence’s career, in contrast, has not moved. He split from his trainer Derrick James, who reportedly sued him for unpaid wages related to the Crawford fight. Spence has also been linked with a fight against Sebastian Fundora.
Fundora is the WBO and WBC Junior Middleweight Champion. He defeated Tim Tszyu to secure the belts after which Spence jumped in the ring to demand that fight. Reports indicated that a fight was close to being agreed upon. However, there has been no announcement in that regard, as Spence looks no closer to returning.
Spence’s Future
This has raised speculation that Spence could retire from the sport. He was also seen in a promotional role, as he promoted Frank Martin, who is signed to his management company. That was during Martin’s fight against Gervonta Davis, as the latter stopped his man to extend his record to 30-0. Spence made it clear that he did enjoy the promotional side of the game, as fans are left wondering whether they will see Spence again.
“But I like the promoter side. I feel like it might be my calling a little bit, being a promoter and looking at the young guys coming up and helping them get to the top of their level, because that’s where we at right now. He [Martin]’s at the top right now, and once he’s at the top, you’re the man,” Spence said
“A lot of people take it lightly just because I came back and fought and all that but that’s serious stuff. It’s not too many people that go high speed in a Ferrari and get thrown from a Ferrari, land on solid concrete and still be here to talk today, still survive, still be coherent and everything. That was traumatic and a brutal experience that I went through…I’ve [always] been rating him (Crawford) high, I’ve rated him super high. It definitely wasn’t my night, but you know I definitely want to get that back,” Spence stated
In the meantime, Spence has hit back at claims that he is over the hill.
