Has Lomachenko Retired? - 'It Was Like A Goodbye Photo'

Vasiliy Lomachenko will make a decision about his future soon.

The 36-year-old could retire from the sport. Lomachenko is a three-weight world champion, making him a contender to be a future Hall of Famer. However, he has not achieved the biggest prize in the sport by becoming undisputed. He missed out on that mantle after losing a unanimous decision to Devin Haney. It was a controversial scorecard, with many believing that Lomachenko had been robbed. The rematch never happened, as Haney moved up to 140 pounds. Lomachenko, however, bounced back with a victory against George Kambosos Jr. in his last fight. That victory was for the vacant IBF Lightweight Title.

Reports linked Lomachenko with a fight against the WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis. But Loma’s team said that the Ukrainian is currently not motivated to take that fight. Lomachenko returned to Ukraine after the Kambosos win, where he is currently with his children. Arum confirmed that Lomachenko informed him any decision over his future would be made by the new year on January 1. The Top Rank promoter has said that he will not press the Ukrainian until that time. But Arum did admit that he felt it could be his last bout based on a photograph he took with him the last time out.

Arum Reacts

“They told me that he was going back to Ukraine because he had to be with his kids who are in school and there was bombing outside and he didn’t feel he was in the position at that point to talk about a future fight. He promised that after the first of the year he would make a decision. So what will that decision [will be?]

“I think it’s true that he didn’t know at that point what decision he would make. I don’t want to disturb him, I don’t want to rush him. He’s been terrific. I remember just outside the restaurant taking a photograph with him and his father and it was almost like a goodbye photograph. Maybe that was just the case,” Arum said

Ukrainian Fighters

If Lomachenko does retire from the sport, Oleksandr Usyk will be the mainstay Ukrainian fighter. Usyk recently defeated Tyson Fury to retain his unified heavyweight titles. He will go down as the best heavyweight of this generation as he extended his undefeated record to 23-0. He is a two-weight undisputed champion, having also won belts at cruiserweight. That puts Usyk in the conversation for one of the best fighters ever.

The impressive manner in which he has managed to clean up the cruiserweight and heavyweight division in just 23 fights is staggering. The wins over Fury were also remarkable since he was giving over 50 pounds and had a six-inch reach disadvantage. And yet, the Ukrainian could negate those disadvantages with his boxing IQ. While Loma and Usyk are close friends, the latter has achieved more in the sport. But Loma has set his legacy in his own right, making him one of the most exciting fighters ever.
