Gervonta Davis Declines Promotion To Full WBA Champion

Gervonta Davis is not interested in becoming the new WBA lightweight champion after the organization elevated him from his ‘regular’ championship status.

The news came after Devin Haney decided to vacate his belts to take on Regis Prograis at junior welterweight for the right to become the WBC champion. The decision has resulted in Tank being a world champion in a second weight class after his feat at super featherweight.

That would potentially give Davis more leverage in negotiations for his fights since he is already a cash cow of the sport. In addition, the prospect of a unification at 135 would increase since Shakur Stevenson holds the WBC belt. But for all the positives that come with this, Davis did not want the title.

“I don’t want that s***” Gervonta Davis said

This naturally begs the question: Why would this be the case? Well, it would prevent Davis from having the freedom to pick the opponents that he wants, given that he would be required to face his mandatories. Not only that, but it has the impact of making the boxer pay sanctioning fees, something which would reduce the amount that Davis takes home following the end of the fight. And in any event, Davis will have to deal with the label, ’email champ’ moving forward. Other boxers such as Devin Haney and Tim Tszyu have had to deal with that criticism since they got their WBC and WBO belts at 135 and 154, respectively, in the same manner after being elevated.

Criticism

“This is a great feeling [after becoming undisputed]. Everyone who was doubting me, everybody who said this and that, they came up with this email champ thing – well now email champ is the top dog, undisputed. There is no dispute, you cannot dispute any title that I have here. This is a dream come true and I couldn’t thank God enough for all this. [As far as the critics], f— them, I’m the top dog now.,” Haney said

“Right now Tim Tszyu is considered a paper champion,” Charlo said to Ben Damon of Main Event. “If he gets the WBO (belt) and they elevate him, he’s a paper champion. A champion that didn’t have to do anything. A spar champion.

“I had to knock everybody out for my belts. So if Tszyu is watching, hey, don’t be too high up on your horse because you didn’t do nothing in boxing. Of course I’m going to take a bigger opportunity like Canelo over Tim Ta-Zoo. Who is Tim Ta-Zoo? Australia knows, but not the world of boxing.

“He’s not a legitimate champion. He fought (Carlos) Ocampo. Who is Ocampo? He didn’t fight dog tough, hard, hard fights. So keep on going. Maybe he’ll get opportunity. But I’m the man. I’m the one who did it in boxing. Tim Ta-Zoo didn’t do nothing in boxing. Tell him to stay humble, keep quiet and time will tell,” Jermell Charlo stated
