Gervonta Davis Could Headline In The UK This Summer

Gervonta Davis is reportedly in line to headline in the UK on Amazon Prime Video PPV in the summer.

Davis has not fought since his seventh-round knockout win over Ryan Garcia last April. Since then, he has had many obstacles to overcome. He was arrested for breaking the terms of his house arrest, which disrupted the biggest win of his career. His coach, Calvin Ford, was also arrested on two charges of an assault with a deadly weapon. Ford’s case is being investigated as questions remain over Davis’ next move. He was linked with facing Frank Martin, a fellow undefeated PBC fighter. Martin has been vocal about how he wants to face the best, including Davis.

Davis Vs. Martin

“I’m right there man. Whoever gives me the opportunity. I’m not ducking nobody. There’s no ‘lets get him ready’. I’m ready for them right now. If they want to give me the opportunity, I’m going to show them what I can do. I’m ready for them right now, There’s a lot of fighters right now that’s good a 135. You can’t really say [who’s the best] until the everybody gets in there with each other. Then you can who is the best,” Martin said

The fight may go down poorly since Davis is not taking on the biggest names in the 135-pound division, mainly Shakur Stevenson. A fight with Devin Haney has also been ruled out, with both sides struggling to agree on who is the A-side and the weight class. That has left Davis looking elsewhere, with a potential fight in England.

Davis’ Options

Some of the names under consideration could be Maxi Hughes or Josh Taylor. Hughes does fight at 135 pounds and arguably beat George Kambosos Jr. in his last fight despite the judges saying otherwise. He could also face the former Undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion Josh Taylor. That bout would make sense in that it gives Davis a fight at 140 against a big name to prepare himself for a potential Haney fight.

A Haney fight is under consideration by the Saudis following Turki Alalshikh’s recent comments. He made it clear that he wanted to make the fight in 2024, which would require Al Haymon and PBC to make some concessions. Davis did state that he wanted two Ferraris delivered to his door personally as a condition for starting negotiations. If he does desire to be the best of his era, he must make those bouts.

“I want him [Gervonta Davis], and I send a message now to Al Haymon – let’s do the job, brother. I want to see Haney in my country. [And] I will try to do it in 2024,” Turki Alalshikh said

But in reality, a UK fight does not make since given the lack of big names in the UK at 135 and 140. Davis would be better served facing the best in his weight class, which is currently Shakur Stevenson or the winner of Kambosos vs. Loma who will face off for the vacant IBF 135-pound belt.
