Foster Aims To Avenge ‘Robbery’ Loss To Conceicao
O’Shaquie Foster is desperate to win back his WBC Super Featherweight Title when he rematches Robson Conceicao this weekend.
Robson won a highly controversial split decision (Conceicao 116-112, 115-113) and (Foster 116-112), with an overwhelming number of boxing insiders calling it a ‘robbery.’ Conceicao offered very little in the earlier rounds, as Foster landed counters early on. The theme continued for most of the fight, as the boxing statistics backed it up. According to CompuBox, Foster connected with 10-plus punches in rounds five, seven, eight, nine and ten. Robson only outdid Foster in that regard when it came to rounds four and 11. Foster also landed more of his punches, with around 25 percent.
Statistics
This was in comparison to around 11 percent from Robson. Foster’s manager, Keith Mills, slammed the judging. At the time of the fight, one of the judges, Tony Lundy, only had experience of one title fight. He oversaw Amanda Serrano beating Calista Silgado in a WBO Featherweight Title fight. But since that was a first-round stoppage, it did not require Lundy to use his expertise. Lundy would score it 116-112 for Robson, which raised many eyebrows. The two fighters understandably had a different take on the matter, as they felt they both had done enough to win.
The rematch is huge as both fighters know there is a unification on the line. The other champions in the division include Lamont Roach Jr. (WBA), Anthony Cacace (IBF) and Emanuel Navarrete (WBO). The Robson defeat was the third of Foster’s career in his third title defense. Prior to that, Foster’s last loss was in 2016 against Rolando Chinea. Since then, he had won 12 fights on the bounce. Now, he has vowed to put things right.
Foster Reacts
“The fight was easy for me. I don’t feel like the result was fair. I know I could have been more active and let my hands go more in certain situations. These are factors that won’t occur again. There are a lot of things I can do in the ring. I feel like I could have put together more combinations. I could have done a little bit more. But now I have the opportunity to do it again.
“Not everyone has that opportunity. Many times you can’t get a rematch, so I have the opportunity to do a perfect job this time . I can get in the ring and try to do something different. I’m good at re-matches. I used to get them a lot in the amateurs and I always got it back again. This is my first re-match as a pro, so I’m excited. It’s going to be fun,” Foster said
