A key turning point in his amateur career was his participation in the World University Championships in 2008, where he made a significant mark by securing a bronze medal.

Building on this success, Gvozdyk continued to excel on the international stage. He represented Ukraine at the 2012 London Olympics, a pinnacle event that highlighted his prowess on a global platform. Competing in the light heavyweight division, he advanced to the quarterfinals, showcasing his refined technique and strategic thinking. This Olympic experience was crucial, serving not only as a testament to his skills but also as a stepping stone that propelled him into the professional ranks.

Professional Career

Oleksandr Gvozdyk, the Ukrainian light heavyweight standout, embarked on his professional boxing journey in 2014 under the banner of Top Rank. Gvozdyk’s debut was memorable; he secured a first-round knockout against Mike Montoya on April 12, 2014, marking an impressive start on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley II fight. His rise through the ranks continued as he captured his first professional title in 2016, overpowering former world title challenger Nadjib Mohammedi for the NABF light heavyweight title. Gvozdyk floored Mohammedi in the second round with a potent right hook, leading to an immediate stoppage by the referee.

Gvozdyk’s defense of his title against Tommy Karpency on July 23, 2016, showcased his resilience. Despite an early knockdown by Karpency, Gvozdyk bounced back to win via a sixth-round knockout. His momentum continued as he overcame Isaac Chilemba in November 2016 after Chilemba sustained a hand injury and retired in the eighth round.

2017 was another successful year for Gvozdyk as he added the NABO title to his resume with a third-round TKO victory over Yunieski Gonzalez. His growing reputation led to a significant match against Craig Baker in August, which he won by knockout in the sixth round. Gvozdyk’s dominance was further solidified on March 17, 2018, when he won the WBC interim light heavyweight title against Mehdi Amar. This victory positioned him for a full title challenge against Adonis Stevenson.
