Biography
Early Life and Amateur Career
Isaac Cruz, born on May 23, 1998, in Mexico City, Mexico, was deeply rooted in a boxing family from a young age. Known as “Pitbull,” Cruz was influenced heavily by his father and grandfather, both of whom were professional boxers. This family environment introduced him to the sport very early, with Cruz spending much of his childhood in the boxing gym, absorbing techniques and gaining invaluable insights from his relatives.
He began his formal training at a remarkably young age and started competing in amateur bouts by the time he was eight. His participation in these early competitions showcased the aggressive style he would later be known for. Cruz’s amateur career was marked by several notable successes, including a significant victory at the National Olympiad in Mexico, which he won in 2010. This prestigious event drew together top young talents from across the country and highlighted Cruz as a promising boxer on the national stage.
Professional Career
Isaac Cruz began his professional boxing career with an impressive string of victories. He made his debut on November 13, 2015, securing a knockout against Alejandro Moreno. This victory was quickly followed by another knockout win over Hugo Morales on December 12, 2015. Cruz continued to demonstrate his power early in his career, with subsequent knockout victories against Oscar Arenas on February 27, 2016, and Jose Luis Guzman on May 14, 2016. His winning streak continued with a unanimous decision over Luis Lugo on July 23, 2016, showcasing his ability to perform well in longer fights.
Over the next several months, Cruz maintained his unbeaten record with knockout wins against Cristian Vazquez on September 17, 2016, Juan Jimenez on November 19, 2016, Juan Zarate on February 11, 2017, and Jose Calyecac on April 29, 2017. He proved his endurance once again by defeating Angel Beranza on July 22, 2017, through a unanimous decision. Further knockouts against Edgar Puerta and Hector Garcia in the later part of 2017 and 2018 solidified his standing as a formidable fighter.
Cruz continued his relentless pace with victories against Froylan Ramirez on October 6, 2018, and Jose Manuel Perez on January 26, 2019, both by technical knockout. He repeated his knockout success against Jose Calyecac in a rematch on May 18, 2019, and Jesus Bravo on July 27, 2019. His twentieth fight, against Thomas Mattice on January 18, 2020, showcased his tenacity and skill, resulting in a split decision victory.
Cruz’s standout moment came on October 31, 2020, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. During the undercard of the Gervonta Davis vs. Léo Santa Cruz fight, Cruz delivered a swift victory over former world title contender Diego Magdaleno, stopping him in just 53 seconds of the first round.
Continuing his ascent, Cruz faced Jose Matias Romero on March 13, 2021, in a WBA lightweight title eliminator at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Despite a challenging bout that saw Cruz deducted a point for a low blow, he secured a unanimous decision with scores of 114–113, 115–112, and 118–109. His momentum carried into his next major fight against former WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas on June 19, 2021. Cruz dominated the fight, knocking Vargas down in the final seconds and winning by a wide unanimous decision with scores of 97–92, 99–90, and 100–89.
A significant opportunity arose when Cruz replaced Rolando Romero to face WBA (Regular) lightweight champion Gervonta Davis on December 5, 2021. Marking his first headline in a pay-per-view event, Cruz showcased resilience but narrowly lost to Davis with judges scoring the bout 115–113, 115–113, and 116–112, marking only the second loss of his career.
Rebounding strongly, Cruz faced former unified featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa on April 16, 2022, at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. He delivered multiple knockdowns, culminating in a fifth-round technical knockout. This victory earned him the then-vacant WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title. On September 4, 2022, Cruz then clashed with Eduardo Ramirez for the then-vacant WBC Silver lightweight title, overpowering Ramirez with a second-round knockout, solidifying his comeback with strategic body shots and powerful hooks.
Cruz’s first defense of his WBC Silver lightweight title was against Giovanni Cabrera on July 29, 2023, at the T-Mobile Arena. Despite a challenging bout that saw Cruz adapting to Cabrera’s reach and movement, he managed a split decision victory with scores of 115-112 and 114-113 in his favor, against one 114-113 for Cabrera. This fight also served as a WBC and WBA Lightweight Title Eliminator and won Cruz the vacant WBO (Latino) lightweight title.
Looking ahead, Cruz was scheduled to challenge Rolando Romero for his WBA light welterweight title on March 30, 2024, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In a dominant performance, Cruz stopped Romero in the eighth round, securing the title and marking another significant milestone in his already impressive career.
