Edwards vs. Yafai: Weight Made, War Ready

Sunny Edwards and Galal Yafai made weight before their WBC Interim Flyweight Title fight on Saturday.
The British domestic clash takes place at the Resorts World Arena, Birmingham. They have faced each other previously in the amateur ranks. Edwards got the better of his man on that occasion. However, it is their first clash in the pro ranks. Edwards is the more experienced fighter with a 21-1 record. He is the ex-WBC Flyweight Champion. Edwards attempted to unify the division against the then WBO Champion Jesse Rodriguez. Sunny was stopped for the first time in his career. However, he returned stronger by beating Adrian Curiel in his last fight.
Yafai is one of the most talented fighters to come through the amateur ranks. He capped off his amateur career with a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Edwards turned professional in 2022 and has continued to go from strength to strength. He is currently 8-0, with six wins by knockout. He has beaten Agustin Gauto and Sergio Oliva, respectively, this year. There is a perception that Yafai is not ready for this fight due to his lack of professional experience. But at 31, he is older than the 28-year-old Sunny, leaving him with plenty to prove. Edwards hit the scales at 111 pounds, while Yafai weighed 11.4 pounds.
Expert’s View
“I’m not able to make a prediction because there’s so many questions that still need to be answered and we’ll get them in this fight. Has the Rodriguez loss stayed with Sunny? How will he cope without Barry Smith in his corner? Has this fight come too early for Yafai? “I’m very excited for the fight because I think we’re going to get a great contest, but this is a coin toss for me, and I’ve got no idea how it’s going to play out,” Bellew said
“This is a good, evenly-matched fight between two technically skilful British fighters that, I believe, will come down to experience. Sunny Edwards has reached the peak level of the sport and I believe that he is still young and hungry enough to win this one on points. But don’t be surprised if it goes the other way by a close margin either,” Wayne Alexander (Former British & European Champion)
“I personally think Sunny Edwards gets the win, Galal is a brilliant fighter and constantly presses and pressures, but that type of fighter seems to be what Sunny performs best with. I can see it being a good, close fight, but Sunny’s slick skills prevailing with a split decision win,” Danny Connor (Southern Area Champion)
