Edwards And Yafai Clash In Their Roundtable Face Off – ‘I’m Gonna Win’
Sunny Edwards faces Galal Yafai this weekend for the WBC Interim Flyweight Title, as they both faced each other in a roundtable for the first time.
Edwards is the former WBC Flyweight Champion. He attempted to unify the division against the WBO Champion Jesse Rodriguez. However, the latter knocked him out, giving Sunny the first defeat of his career. Since then, Edwards has bounced back, beating Adrian Curiel in his last fight to win the interim belt. Edwards is the more experienced fighter with a 21-1 record. However, he only has four knockouts, which could work against him.
Yafai may only have 8 pro fights, but he is undefeated with 8-0 record. Six of his wins have come by knockout. Yafai has three stoppage wins from his last four bouts. He arrives into the fight with a victory against Sergio Oliva. That was his second win of 2024, as he hopes to continue his winning streak. Edwards is the favorite given he has a win over Yafai in the amateurs. The winner knows everything is on line, with a possible world title shot against the full WBC champion Angel Ayala next. Here were some of the key comments from the roundtable.
Roundtable
“I’m an Olympic gold medalist…There is history. He beat me in amateurs. We have sparred. But we set the record straight in November,” Yafai
“From what I can remember from that [amateur] fight, I was surprised. [This is] because I’d been knocking out people. I was only a kid at the time,” Sunny
“Sunny is a good fighter. I’ve shared loads of rounds with him. I’ve watched him for years. He’s watched me for years. People are gonna think, yeah, it’s too soon for him, but that’s where I will prove them wrong,” Yafai
Further Quotes
“I’m excited for it because, like I said, I usually have to do my work in America or somewhere or other, to get the good fights,” Edwards
“When I win this, I want to class myself as a world champion. Forget the other two that are fighting for it. I don’t care about the politics. You give me a belt after, I’m gonna call myself a champion,” Edwards
“I want to be world champion. He’s been a world champion. Simple as that for me,” Yafai
“I’m gonna win. He thinks he’s gonna win. We’re competitive. Both are going to be confident from the spars,” Yafai
“I know that I have to be fit. I know I have to be sharp, I have to be ready, and I have to be making the right decisions to beat him,” Edwards
