Devin Haney Slams Ryan Garcia For Pulling Out Of Talks

Devin Haney has hit out at Ryan Garcia for pulling out of talks for a fight with him.

Garcia initially called out Haney following The Dream’s win over Regis Prograis, which made him the WBC junior welterweight champion. Oscar De La Hoya then confirmed talks were set to begin soon, only for Garcia to have a change of heart. Ryan said he was turning his attention towards a fight with Rolando Romero because it made more business sense. He also hit out at Haney’s PPV numbers with Prograis, claiming it only sold 35,000 PPVs.

Garcia On Haney

“Devin lost his shot; he thought it was Haney vs. Garcia; he should’ve known it was Garcia vs. Haney. He did 35,000 PPV buys [vs Regis Prograis],” Garcia said

This decision also came after he was spotted with Floyd Mayweather Jr, raising suggestions he may have influenced him. Romero is a PBC fighter, and it is no secret that PBC keeps their fights in-house. In response, Haney has slammed Garcia by claiming he is not a big star as he claims.

Devin Haney Responds

“If Ryan is such a big draw, why has he only fought on PPV once? Never before, never after. Why couldn’t he sell the last arena [Toyota Center] he fought in?” Devin Haney stated

Nevertheless, Garcia’s only fight on PPV did set records. He fought Gervonta Davis in a fight that sold over 1.2 million PPVs. It became the highest-grossing event 2023, with a gate of over $20 million. The fight also resulted in Garcia picking up $30 million. Those numbers far exceeded Haney’s, but it may also have been due to Davis’ presence.

Bill Haney Reacts

Haney also sold out the Chase Center for his fight with Prograis, showing he does bring out the audience with a solid live gate. But given that he was fighting in his hometown, it was perhaps expected that Haney would bring in a huge crowd. Garcia has suggested that a fight with Haney will be bigger in the future, but Bill’s following comments suggest that the opportunity may not come about in the future.

“They made every excuse. It was too much for you, Ryan, because you made the biggest mistake in the world. Whenever Teo is ready [he can fight Devin]. He’s got work to do with Jamaine Ortiz. What does he [Ryan] mean that he’s a draw and Devin’s not? His own people are our people. Can we all get along?

He [Ryan] doesn’t care about these people, so I expected that out of him,” said Bill, talking down about Ryan changing his mind about fighting Devin. Who cares about Rolly? They [the fans] don’t care about Rolly. I’m doing what the people love. They pay good money to come out and see good fights,” Bill Haney stated

Team Haney is understandably frustrated, but will Garcia’s decision pay off. Time will tell how it all plays out. ‘Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingnews.com
