Derrick James is one of boxing’s most accomplished trainers around.
With several world champions under his stable, the American has forged a reputation that stands up with the best of them.
In this article, we will explore some of the fighters in his stable.
Anthony Joshua
AJ joined James for his first fight against Jermaine Franklin. The former unified heavyweight champion secured a unanimous-decision win, as the pair secured their first victory.
The performance raised many talking points, as Joshua’s combination punching was abandoned in favour of a methodical performance behind the jab.
Jermell Charlo
Charlo is set to face Canelo Alvarez in the biggest fight of his career on September 30th, 2023. In doing so, Charlo will move up two weight classes to challenge for Canelo’s undisputed titles at 168.
This will be the first time that Charlo fights above 154 lbs. But given that Charlo has already become undisputed at junior-middleweight, James has contributed to that.
Errol Spence Jr.
The ‘Truth’ takes on Terence Crawford for the undisputed welterweight title on July 29th, 2023. The winner will become the first undisputed welterweight champion in the four belt era and go down as the greatest welterweight of this generation.
Ryan Garcia
Garcia joined James in the aftermath of his loss to Gervonta Davis, as he suffered a seventh-round TKO loss.
James will be tasked with improving Garcia’s fundamentals, which were exposed in that Davis performance, as the fighter lost his way following the second-round knockdown against Davis.
But given that Garcia is fighting at 140 lbs, it will be a new test for both James and his fighter.
Frank Martin
Martin recently overcame Artem Harutyunyan via a unanimous decision in what was a tougher-than-expected performance.
Prior to the fight, Martin was looking to put in a statement performance. And in doing so, target fights with Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson.
However, the reaction post-fight suggested that Martin had some way to go. Clearly, James has a talented stable at his disposal. So the question is can he get the best out of them?
