Usyk dismisses easy-money talk ahead of Verhoeven bout

Oleksandr Usyk insists he is taking Rico Verhoeven seriously as a fighting opponent, not a payday. The unified heavyweight champion said preparation for the kickboxing star turned boxer requires full focus.

“I'm not [thinking] relaxed and this is easy money. This is a fighter”

— Oleksandr Usyk, via BBC Sport

What Oleksandr Usyk said

Usyk faces Verhoeven in a crossover bout that has drawn scepticism from some quarters. The Ukrainian holds the WBA, WBO and WBC heavyweight titles after beating Tyson Fury twice in 2024. Verhoeven is a decorated kickboxer making the switch to boxing.

What it moves

Usyk told BBC Sport his mindset remains that of a professional facing a legitimate threat. The comment suggests he has studied Verhoeven's striking background and sees risk in underestimating a combat-sports veteran. A fight date has yet to be announced.
