Connor Ben’s WBC Removal Explained

Conor Benn’s removal from the WBC rankings has raised many talking points.
The welterweight has been suspended by UKAD following his two failed VADA tests for Clomiphene.
The WBC had initially reinstated Conor into their rankings. This was on the basis that ‘elevated’ levels of egg consumption may have resulted in the Clomiphene.
However, the organization has now removed Benn. This is not the first time that Benn has had issues with the WBC.
He was initially was not part of their ‘Clean Boxing’ Program only to then join it. But this latest removal increases speculation that a decision over Benn’s career could be made soon.
However, the WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman had a much simpler explanation for that. Benn’s inactivity had led to the organization removing him from their rankings.
“The WBC ratings committee decided to remove Conor Benn due to the 15-month inactivity which is part of the ratings criteria. It seems there is no scheduled fight at this moment.
“But Conor may contact the WBC to explain his case and his ranking situation may be addressed as a rating appeal [in] its process,” Sulaiman
This should not come as a surprise as Benn’s potential opponent in the form of Chris Eubank Jr. is now facing Liam Smith in a rematch on September 2nd, 2023.
That removes the possibility of a Benn fight for now or in the future, as there is no guarantee that Eubank wins.
And if that were to happen, there may be calls on him to walk away from the sport. After all, Smith intends to stop Eubank once again.
“I probably predict he’ll come off another stoppage loss too and then it’s down to Chris and his team, but at 33 years of age, losing twice to me, is his ambitions to still be world champion quite realistic? Probably not. I feel he would probably be done after this but with Chris and his ego, he might not be,” Eubank Jr.
Both Benn and Eubank’s futures remain uncertain which is why the next few months will be crucial. You can stay up-to-date with the latest happenings in the world of boxing by visiting boxingblitz right here.
