Christian Mbilli Vs. Jaime Munguia – How Does It Play Out?

Talks are reportedly underway for a super middleweight clash between WBC Interim Super Middleweight Champion Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) and Jaime Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) for early 2026.
Mbilli is coming off a split draw against Lester Martinez in September. The result was a setback, having racked up four stoppage wins from his previous five. However, Mbilli knows a win puts him in a position to face the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Terence Crawford, who beat Canelo Alvarez in September.

Meanwhile, Munguia is not in the best form. He has two wins from his last four, losing to Canelo Alvarez and Bruno Surace. However, this included wins over Erik Bazinyan and Surace in the rematch. The Surace rematch raised controversy after Munguia failed a VADA test, only to then be cleared.

The Approach

Mbilli’s approach will be to utilize his strong gas tank to overwhelm Munguia physically. His high work rate, which can reach 80 to 100 punches per round, is designed to lead to a late stoppage. For example, in his fight against Carlos Gongora, Mbilli’s constant pressure, despite taking clean shots, ultimately broke the boxer.
However, Mbilli’s style can leave him open to counters, particularly uppercuts and hooks, as seen in his split draw against Lester Martinez. His best chance against Munguia is to control the inside, forcing Munguia to fight off the back foot and preventing the Mexican from setting his feet for his own powerful combinations.

Munguia’s strategy must be to establish his straight right hand and left hook early to earn Mbilli’s respect. While Munguia possesses an excellent engine and heavy hands, his defense is leaky—he tends to rely on his chin and strength rather than head movement or footwork. If he attempts to simply trade with Mbilli, his history of getting caught with clean punches, as seen with Canelo and the first Surace fight, could happen again.
