Chisora Will Retire After His 50th Fight - 'Sounds Like He Has CTE'

Derek Chisora has opened up about his future, saying that he will retire from boxing after 50 fights.

Chisora is coming off a massive win, beating Joe Joyce to defy the odds in a thrilling fight. The victory meant the 40-year-old’s record stands at 35-13. Chisora may have numerous losses, but he has fought everyone. Chisora has been in the ring with Dillian Whyte, Tyson Fury, Vitali Klitschko and Oleksandr Usyk. Despite losing those fights, Chisora’s fight with Usyk is used as a reference point on how to get success against the Ukrainian.

However, Chisora is risking staying in the sport too long. There are suggestions that he has developed CTE. This condition results in slurred speech, something which has plagued numerous fighters in their lives post boxing. Chisora also has a family, making any decision even more important. But given that he has nothing else to prove, he does risk staying for one too many fights. Chisora was clear that he was in control of his career, as he felt the 50th fight would be his last.

Chisora’s Retirement

“I signed with Frank Warren and we went to York Hall, I think it’s a good time to end my career with the man I started with. Thanks, Frank. I’ve got two fights left, I’m not retiring tonight, but this was my last London fight. I’ll go to Manchester before the end of the year. To be honest, I do not know, but I’ve got 50 fights in my head. I have to get to 50. Yes, I will. 100 per cent, I’m out,” Chisora said

Chisora did not mention the names of any opponents. There are a few attractive fights available. Chisora has the chance to rematch Whyte after close fights. Chisora lost a controversial split decision in their first fight. Meanwhile, Chisora was performing well until he got knocked out in round 11 in their second bout. Whyte is also in the latter part of his career. He recently cleared his name after a failed test, beating Christian Hammer on his return from the investigation into his failed test.

Chisora’s Options

Another option is to box Deontay Wilder. The Bronze Bomber has lost his last two fights, losing to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. Zhang knocked out Wilder in the fifth round, leaving questions about whether the Bronze Bomber would retire. Wilder is still active, as he has no intention of walking away just yet. Chisora has requested the Wilder fight before, making it an intriguing match-up.

“I don’t have many left in me but what I do have I will give my all to you guys. I don’t have many left, so my next couple of fights… I’m on my way out. I don’t want no easy fights, I want the hard fights.  [And] I told Eddie Hearn the other day, if he can get me the Bronze Bomber I’ll be happy. I want to fight everybody in my era. Win or lose, I just want to fight,” Chisora stated

There is an outside chance of boxing Francis Ngannou. The Predator has faced Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. While he lost both fights, the performance against Fury showed Ngannou has ability as he lost a split decision. A Chisora-Ngannou fight would produce a back-and-forth affair, making it an appealing fight.
