Canelo Regrets Working With De La Hoya - 'I Would’ve Done Better With PBC'

Canelo Alvarez says his career would have been better had he signed with PBC earlier rather than being at Golden Boy.

The Mexican currently fights on a fight-by-fight basis, although he has fought with PBC in his last three bouts. Before that, he was with Golden Boy Promotions. Oscar De La Hoya helped build Canelo, who would later become a four-weight champion and of the best. But they are no longer on good terms, having fallen out over financial reasons.

Canelo Reacts

Alvarez accused De La Hoya of attempting to steal money from him, which he reportedly discovered while doing an audit. De La Hoya hit back by suing Canelo for defamation. Despite having made over $200 million in the sport, Canelo had some regrets over the choices he made in his career.

“I think I would’ve done better with PBC, way better. I did good things with Golden Boy and I’m not mad with that, but I think it would have been better with PBC,” Canelo said

Nevertheless, it is important to bear in mind the following points. Canelo fought the biggest names during his association with Golden Boy. He took on Daniel Jacobs, GGG, Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr., to name a few. However, with PBC, known for keeping fights in house, there is a perception that Canelo could have taken less risky fights and earned more money.

That would have deprived fans of the biggest fights, which Canelo has now been accused of doing. His refusal to fight David Benavidez did not go down well. Canelo demanded $200 million to make that fight, creating the perception that he was pricing himself out.

Saudis Respond

The Mexican Monster had been the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Champion for over two years. However, Benavidez will now stay at 175 pounds, leaving Canelo to fight Edgar Berlanga. Turki Alalshikh was not impressed with Canelo, feeling the Mexican was ducking the biggest fights to chase easier paydays after talks over a Terence Crawford fight broke down.

“I heard what Canelo said that he respects me but doesn’t like the way we do business. As for him respecting me, it doesn’t matter to me if he does or not. ‘As for the way I do business, I know why he doesn’t like it, because I only target big fights at fair prices, so of course anyone who likes easy fights won’t like that.

“And I know how he feels after losing to Bivol, so he’s been looking for easier fights ever since. Also, I’m not the one who’s afraid of fighting Benavidez or Crawford. ‘Therefore, I knew he was wasting our time and making excuses with big amounts of money that can’t be paid. So I’m continuing my way to make big fights that serve the boxing world, and he’s on his way to making easy show-only fights,” Turki Alalshikh stated

Canelo’s legacy is intact, given what he has accomplished. But if he wants to be considered the best ever, wins over Benavidez and Crawford would go some way. But at 34, Canelo is unlikely to take those fights now that he is not in his prime.
