Canelo Alvarez Will Fight William Scull Next - Fans Are Not Happy

Canelo Alvarez will fight William Scull according to the latter’s promoter.

The IBF had ordered Canelo to face Scull next. That fight will generate a little interest, as Scull is not a big name. But it is in David Benavidez’s interest for Canelo to fight Scull, as a win keeps his undisputed dreams alive. That makes a Canelo-Benavidez fight much bigger while allowing the Mexican Monster to make history. Scull’s promoter, Ingo Volckmann, has now confirmed a deal has been done.

“We are happy that we were able to get this over the line. Purse bids have since been cancelled, and a date will be revealed and officially announced in due course,” Volckmann said

It is not clear if the fight is next, or if it is a step-aside deal. Fans were hoping for the Benavidez fight. Benavidez has said he will return to super middleweight following his win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk. The Mexican Monster had his first fight at 175, beating the Ukrainian via a unanimous decision. The win meant he has now become mandatory for the winner of Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol. They fight for the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Championship on October 12. Benavidez put on a solid performance to win a comfortable unanimous decision. However, he did not trouble the Ukrainian enough to get him out of the ring.

That was a contrast to Benavidez’s fight at 168, where he is usually the much bigger man. Before beating Gvozdyk, Benavidez had stopped Demetrius Andrade. After the Gvozdyk win, Benavidez confirmed that he had injured his hand coming into the fight. While that may explain the lack of a knockout, it does not justify moving up for one fight. The decision may have been made to allow Benavidez the advantage of being the much bigger man at 168 and then target the Canelo fight for undisputed.

Benavidez Reacts

“I wasn’t throwing so much in this fight, because my hand is messed up, but we still dominated. We still won every single round against a great ex-champion and I’m just happy for this victory and just happy to keep pushing forward and keep dominating this light heavyweight division. I definitely want to invoke my mandatory right. It’s something that for the past three years is rightfully mine, so like I said, this was the perfect opportunity for me to come up and win another [interim] belt, but I can still make 168 easy so we’re still looking to come back down to 168,” Benavidez said

“It’s a win-win fight: the boxing world wins, the fans win and it’s the fight we have to make. If Canelo really thinks he’s the best in the world, let him come and beat me and shut my mouth. Even with the hand hurting I kept hurting him. I kept hurting him to the body early in the fight, but I was looking for the left hand with my hand kind of open. [And] I couldn’t really do much. I feel it does translate to this weight,” Benavidez added
