Boxing World Mourns Israel Vazquez’s Passing – ‘A True Mexican Fighter’
Mexico’s Israel Vazquez has passed away at 46 following a battle with cancer.
Vazquez leaves behind a big legacy, having been one of Mexico’s most-loved boxers. He is a three-time Junior Featherweight Champion who retired with a 44-5 record, which includes 32 wins by way of knockout. He also had The Ring Magazine Title between 2005 and 2008. He turned professional in 1995 at 17, competing all the way until 2010. He was involved in numerous thrilling fights, including four fights with Rafael Marquez as their rivalry was tied at 2-2. Oscar De La Hoya had recently urged the boxing community to help support Vazquez’s treatment.
“I wanted to call out all the entire boxing community to support our fellow brother Israel Vazquez. He has terminal cancer and needs our help. His entire family started a GoFundMe a week ago, and they’ve managed to raise almost $25,000 of his $75,000 goal. Are you telling me there aren’t 50 of us in boxing who could give a few $1,000 each really, come on now. I will double the current money raised and contribute $25,000 myself,” De La Hoya stated
And following the news of his passing, tributes have poured out for the fighter, who left a long lasting impression on the boxing community.
