Bill Haney Slams Media Over Their PPV Claims For Haney-Prograis - 'They Can’t Stop'

Bill Haney has hit out at the media over their claim that Devin Haney’s fight with Regis Prograis only sold 50,000 PPVs.

Reports of such a figure emerged after Haney became a two-weight world champion. He dominated Prograis to become the new WBC junior welterweight champion. The victory set the ball rolling for a potential fight with Gervonta Davis as ‘Team Haney’ reached out to Davis, claiming Tank turned down a guarantee of $20 million for the fight.

Davis responded by urging ‘Team Haney’ to contact Al Haymon to make the fight. But the PPV numbers became a sticking point as both Leonard Ellerbe and Bob Arum backed up suggestions the PPV flopped. Bill Haney has continued denying that figure, stating it was much more.

He pointed out how the Chase Center was sold out for Haney’s first fight in the Bay Area since he turned professional in 2015. But a high gate does not mean the boxing fans had the same view of it from home, as Bill has refused to make the numbers official. Instead, he criticised the media for creating a certain narrative.

“Listen, look around the arena. “I’m not stupid, so guess what? [Bleep] everybody else. Ask the content creators are they making money, was the engagement and the fight big, period. Guess what? They came with these numbers. What are they talking about? Who is Rick Glaser?

“You don’t have nobody. You’re talking about the numbers. I know the numbers. The numbers are way beyond that. Guess what? My friend told me, Richie Rich. He told me, ‘You know what, Bill? They can’t stop the train.’ Bill Haney said

Haney’s Numbers

The numbers will likely play a crucial part in negotiations with Gervonta Davis. Tank is seen as the A-side, as his fight with Ryan Garcia sold over 1.2 million PPVs. The numbers Haney was putting on suggests it is far from that. But Haney has demanded the same terms Ryan Garcia got to make the fight happen. However, Garcia brought a vast social media following into the fight.

His fanbase crosses over to the casual fans, as shown by his Instagram following of over 10 million. Although Haney is a former undisputed lightweight champion and a two-weight world champion, those belts appear secondary to the commercial value of a fighter. That must be overcome if fans want to see Davis fight Haney. Those allegedly low PPV numbers are an obstacle to making the fight happen.

“So guess what they’re doing now? They done turned into graffiti artists. They were trying to stop it, and now they’ve got a spray paint can, and they just spring on the side of it,” Bill Haney

The only way to stop the criticism towards the PPV numbers would be to release the figures. And there is no getting away from that. ‘Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingnews.com
