Benavidez Slams Canelo For Ripping Fans Off With $90 PPVs - 'He’s Spitting In your Face'

David Benavidez has slammed Canelo Alvarez for ripping his fans off with his PPV events.

Canelo is under increasing pressure to fight Benavidez, who has been his WBC mandatory at 168 for over two years. The fight has not been made, as Benavidez moved up to 175 pounds. The Mexican Monster will box Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Interim Light Heavyweight Belt. Canelo justified his actions, saying he would fight Benavidez for $200 million. In the meantime, he has taken fights against lesser-skilled opponents.

He boxed Jermell Charlo last year, who moved up from 154, in a one-sided unanimous decision win. In his last fight, Canelo backtracked on his comments about not fighting Mexicans by taking on Jaime Munguia. The PPV price for Charlo was $84.99. Meanwhile, the Munguia fight cost $89.99. Both those events cost more than the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Uysk, which was priced at $69.99. Since Fury-Usyk was a much bigger fight, Benavidez has now singled out Canelo for exploiting his fans.

Benavidez On Canelo

“This guy’s charging so much for his PPVs, it’s like he’s spitting in you guys’ faces. He’s saying he doesn’t give a..[damn] what you guys want; he’s not going to give you the best fights. If you hold all the titles, you’ve got to fight the best in the division. I’m #1, and #2 is David Morrell. He’s not fighting me, and he’s not fighting Morrell. How long is he [Canelo] going to call himself champion if he doesn’t fight #1 or #2. He’s disrespecting you guys. If you guys are cool with that, then there’s nothing I can say about it,” Benavidez said

Canelo may now be running out of options. The IBF has ordered him to face William Scull next. That fight will struggle to sell, meaning Canelo has a decision to make. He can vacate the belt, meaning that a fight with Benavidez won’t be for undisputed. This will reduce the purse he can command. Another option is to face Scull and agree on a fight with Benavidez afterwards.

Canelo’s Future

That will appease the fanbase and generate interest in a Scull fight since fans would tune in to see if Alvarez will win before facing Benavidez. A final option is to box Terence Crawford. Reports indicate the Saudis want to make that fight. It could be a compromise for fans and Canelo. Alvarez will fancy his chances of beating a smaller man, who is coming up from 154. He has already done this with Jermell Charlo. However, Benavidez is much bigger and brings himself down to 168 before rehydrating. Based on his recent comments, Canelo will do what is best for his career.

“Crawford is a great fighter, obviously, [but he’s] three divisions below. As I’ve said before, I’ve fought bigger guys in my category, smaller guys, older guys, younger guys. “At the end of the day, I was born to fight and I’ll fight anyone, obviously on terms that suit me best. At this point in my career I’ll always make the best fights but they have to benefit me. It depends on the money, but why not?” Alvarez stated
