Aspinall Says He Will Retire Jones – ‘He’s Overweight, Cheetos Fingers’
Tom Aspinall has hit out Dana White for saying Jon Jones is a better fighter than him.
White has consistently said that Jones is the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world. His accomplishments have proved that over the years, winning the heavyweight title on his return from a three-year break to beat Ciryl Gane at UFC 285. But one fight in over three years is not enough to take the mantle as the best fighter. Jones was meant to defend the belt against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295.
However, he withdrew with a pectoral muscle injury. Aspinall wanted to fight Mioicic for the title and have Jones stripped, which White refused. Aspinall instead fought Sergei Pavlovich and knocked him out in the first round to win the interim title. Tom then knocked out Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 to retain his belt, meaning he will face the winner of Jones-Miocic. However, given that they both could retire after the fight, it will play into the narrative that Jones was ducking him. Aspinall felt there was no one on his level currently.
Aspinall On White
“The way I look at it, I’m the best heavyweight in the world. I’m not getting my credit for it. They’re holding the belt hostage, mate, and Jon Jones is loving it. He’s loving the fact that Dana is getting on every interview possible … you’re talking about bantamweights, and Dana White flips it and starts talking about how good Jon Jones is. I’m like, ‘Mate, if he’s that good, let’s fight.’ I’m the No. 1 heavyweight right now. Let’s put it on the line, and let’s see who the man is – me or Jon. It’s as simple as that,” Aspinall said
Nevertheless, White has defended the Miocic fight because he and Jones have done enough to deserve that legacy fight. Jones’ only blip on his record has been a disqualification loss to Matt Hamill in 2009. Meanwhile, there was a no-contest against Daniel Cormier at UFC 214. As for Miocic, he has won the heavyweight title twice. He has defended it four times over that period. He is considered one of the best heavyweights ever.
Aspinall On Jones
Miocic will retire after this fight, regardless of the result, as per White. While White wants this legacy fight, Aspinall may risk missing out on the Jones fight. That would leave him fighting for the vacant title, which could then take place against Alex Pereira, who has hinted at moving up to heavyweight. White has dismissed Jones fighting Pereira, meaning Aspinall is the leading name. But Aspinall felt that Jones would retire without facing him.
“We know he’s a bit overweight these days. The guy sat there with the Cheetos fingers or whatever, the Doritos fingers with his iPhone in his hand, waiting for me to get knocked out so he can start tweeting about it. Let’s be honest: Since I won that fight, he’s been completely silent and continues to go completely quiet about me because there’s no way on Earth that he’s going to fight me. I’ll retire Jon Jones without even fighting him,” Aspinall stated
