Harrison vs. Nunes: Is It Worthy Of The UFC White House Card?

UFC Bantamweight Champion Kayla Harrison expects the Amanda Nunes fight to happen soon, saying the fight will end quickly with a win.

Harrison’s comments follow after her UFC 316 win in June, where she secured a victory over Julianna Peña to win the bantamweight belt. Immediately following the win, Harrison engaged in a staredown with the former bantamweight and featherweight champion Nunes. Nunes retired after successfully defending her title against Irene Aldana in 2023 at UFC 289, with her only loss during a 15-fight unbeaten streak coming against Julianna Peña in 2021.

Despite her retirement, Nunes is expected to return to the UFC to challenge Harrison after having recently reentered the testing pool, lining up her return for 2026. Harrison suggested that the fight could happen soon, before the UFC White House event in June, 2026, where she expects to feature. Kayla also had eyes on possible fights with Valentina Shevchenko or Ronda Rousey later down the line.

“There’s a fight on the horizon, it’s not booked yet. It’s a fight that we all want to see happen, and it’s gonna happen sooner rather than later. … Oh, for sure, I’m not done. I’m gonna whoop her ass real quick. In my perfect world, either Valentina beats Weili, and then we do like a USA vs Russia, like Rocky IV style. Or, everybody is talking about how Ronda is coming back, so that would be great. … In my perfect world, I fight soon, and then I fight again at the White House. But for sure, I’m gonna be on the White House card. I’m the only American champion currently,” Harrison said

Harrison vs. Nunes fight is arguably a perfect women’s matchup for the White House card. Harrison, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the most decorated American combat athletes ever, represents the ideal figure for this. Her fighting style—dominant Judo and pressure— is also suitable. The event would be a massive spectacle, and Harrison’s status as the current American champion facing the returning, retired G.O.A.T., Amanda Nunes, provides a powerful, marketable narrative.

The main obstacle to this is the timing. Placing such a crucial, high-stakes fight on the South Lawn, which will have a severely limited capacity (under 5,000) due to security, diminishes the overall live gate and financial potential of the fight. The risk is also high: if Nunes were to lose her first fight back against someone else, the potential main event against Harrison would lose its hype.
