Zayas Dominates Teixeira In A One-Sided Unanimous Decision Win
Xander Zayas dominated Patrick Teixeira to win a one-sided unanimous decision in their 154-pound clash, remaining undefeated.
Zayas was facing the first southpaw of his career. He started the fight well, moving around as he tried to work out his opponent. Zayas found success in round two, popping Teixeira’s head back with a left hook. However, Teixeira hit back with a shot to the body, showing he was going nowhere.
Zayas Dominates
But it was a massive success for Zayas, who landed 14 shots to the body in that round. In the third round, Teixeira showed more resolve. He landed a one-two combination. However, Zayas continued to press the action. He connected with a right uppercut, followed by a left. As the round entered a close, Zayas hit the body once again. Zayas was bossing the fight as he penetrated his opponent’s guard. But Teixeira caught Zayas’ attention with a right hand in the fifth.
In the second half of the fight, it was the same story. Zayas increased the pace in round eight, landing a left-right combination upstairs. Zayas was walking his opponent down. He threw a right uppercut, followed by an attack to the body.
The doctors checked out Teixeira at the end of the eighth, but they allowed the fight to continue. Teixeira’s left eye had blood pouring with blood in round nine, as he was trying desperately to make it to the final bell. He achieved that but lost out on the cards in a wide decision: 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91.
Post-Fight
“Since I was five years I’ve been dreaming about this, and it is happening. (Teixeira) was tough, obviously knowing that he was a veteran, he knew how to survive in there. It was sometimes difficult to find the body, but with the experience, he hid it. I was trying to land the hook, and he was ducking underneath. I felt it was a tough test, but I passed it with flying colors.
“Like everyone at Top Rank tells me, before you go 12, you have to go 10. I did it today. I graduated. Those were the rounds I needed. I’m ready for whatever they throw at me now. I have to work on that angle to the lefty, getting to the outside, working the body. I felt my distance was key today. I’ve been saying it, Josh Kelly. (Top Rank) also just signed Vito Mielnicki, a good friend of mine, but he’s 154 pounds and he’s form Jersey. It’s a fight we can make happen in the future,” Zayas said
