The Junior Middleweight division is reportedly set for a unification clash between WBO Champion Xander Zayas and his WBA counterpart Abass Baraou.

The title bout is reportedly being finalized for January 31 for Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, fulfilling Zayas’ aim to fight in his hometown. Zayas reportedly rejected a defense against welterweight Giovanni Santillan, putting the pressure on him to perform. Zayas overcame Jorge Garcia Perez to secure the vacant WBO belt in July. It was his second win of 2025, having given Siawa Spomer his first loss in February.

Meanwhile, Baraou enters the bout as a champion who earned his spot through an upset. The German scored a major career-defining victory in August, upsetting Yoenis Tellez to secure the WBA Interim belt. Baraou’s status was recently upgraded to the full WBA Champion after Terence Crawford officially moved up to 168 pounds to challenge Canelo Alvarez, vacating the WBA title at 154 pounds.

The Approach

Zayas’s strategy will be to utilize his superior boxing, quick feet, and the home-crowd. His primary tactical objective will be to establish a clear lead in the early rounds by landing the cleaner, faster combinations. Zayas must employ his long, accurate jab (he stands 5’10” with a 74″ reach) to maintain distance and interrupt Baraou’s aggression. When Baraou attempts to close the distance, Zayas will use his foot speed to pivot out and punish the German with sharp counter-hooks.

Baraou’s primary tactical objective will be to negate Zayas’s speed and control the space in the center of the ring. Baraou must avoid being stuck on the end of Zayas’s jab and instead employ relentless, intelligent forward pressure, making the fight ugly and taxing. He will look to lean on Zayas, forcing clinches and working short, powerful punches to the body to sap his conditioning.
