Wood Vs. Warrington Post-Fight Comments

In some boxing news, Leigh Wood is already looking to the future following his win over Josh Warrington after claiming that he will no longer be fighting at featherweight.
Wood stopped Warrington in dramatic fashion with a seventh-round stoppage after being behind at the time of the stoppage. The win kept Wood’s WBA title in a fight where he was being outclassed until the stoppage.
But now that the dust has settled down somewhat, Wood was not interested in unifying the division.
Wood’s Comments
“I fight until the end, I’ve not got a quit in me. I knew he’d get sloppy at times and I made him pay. I had to give rounds away, he’s a great champion and he doesn’t quit. I had to dig in and dig deep and I did, but I knew my power would get to him. It’s about staying calm and composed. I got the job done,” Wood
Nevertheless, at the age of 35, Wood may not have too many other opportunities to secure titles and big paydays. As of now, unification fights against Robeisy Ramirez, Luis Alberto Lopez or Rey Vargas are available.
However, if those opportunities are not taken up, then the natural course of action may be a sign that Wood does vacate his belt. That should not come as a surprise, given his comments prior to the fight.
“It gets harder every time to make the featherweight limit. The last time against Lara was harder than before and Lara not making the weight made me feel even more sorry for myself. I know what it is like. I’m 35 now and I’ve been making this weight for a long time, it doesn’t get easier. I think it takes a little bit out of me and I would be stronger at junior lightweight, definitely. There’s nothing more I can cut, except if I was to cut an arm off,” Wood said
Warrington’s Comments
Meanwhile, Warrington has now lost a second fight in a row after coming second best to Luis Alberto Lopez in the fight before. Meanwhile, a loss in a mega-domestic clash has resulted in Warrington’s stock falling.
And given that he is a two-time world champion, does Warrington have anything else to prove? In response to the defeat, this is what he had to say.
“I switched off for a second, I felt a bit rusty but I felt I was really come into it. He caught me with a good shot, I felt good, I heard the count but the referee was waving his arms. That’s two defeats on the bounce and I don’t think it’s done me justice. I hope it’s not the last one. Ideally I would like to run it back again, I felt I was cruising it at times,” Warrington
Both Wood and Warrington have major steps to consider moving forward. But one thing for sure is that they have made it at the highest level. And there is no getting away from that.
