Wilder's Big Social Media Announcement

Deontay Wilder made a big announcement on social media, hinting that he will continue boxing.

Wilder is currently in the worst form of his career, with only one victory in his last four fights. Some have put this down to his decision to sack Mark Breland and hire Malik Scott. Scott has been blamed for trying to change Wilder. This has been from a power puncher and an athletic fighter to a technical boxer. Wilder’s biggest assets in his career have been his right hand and jab, which have been used with his ability to close the distance to secure devastating knockouts. However, his last few performances have suggested that those assets are no longer there.

Wilder’s Problems

He suffered a unanimous decision defeat against Joseph Parker by only winning a single round across all the scorecards. The victory was devastating since reports indicated he had signed a two-fight deal with Anthony Joshua, which depended on him beating Parker. Wilder then sought to bounce back by taking on Zhilei Zhang. However, that fight did not go any better, as Wilder was knocked out in the fifth round. There were suggestions he could call time on his career. After the Parker defeat, Wilder admitted that he had undertaken Ayahuasca.

Malik Scott suggested that perhaps Wilder may have lost his killer instinct. After the Zhang defeat, there were question marks over whether Wilder would continue fighting since a title shot was not close. Naturally, there were doubts about the motivation for fighting. The Bronze Bomber took up the sport very late in order to secure money for his daughter, who suffers from Spina Bifida. However, Wilder has recently stated that there were reasons for his poor performances.

He admitted that he had broken his arm before the Joseph Parker fight, something he was not aware of. This is critical since it would have impacted his ability to land his biggest shots. He was spotted in a sling on his arm after the Zhang defeat, giving some credibility to his claims.

After the Parker and Zhang losses, there was nothing to indicate that he had injured his arm after the bout, suggesting that it may have been a long-term issue. There have been calls from ex-fighters such as Carl Froch for Wilder to retire. However, Wilder has issued a defiant statement on social media, playing various clips of his detractors before leaving a passionate message to his fans that he will be back.

Wilder Reacts

“I’ve been through losses way before boxing. [And] I’ve been through challenges way before I stepped foot in the ring. I’ve been hit and knocked down way before I put a pair of boxing gloves on. I’m still here because it’s the mindset to get back up and keep pushing forward…That’s why, for the last few months, I’ve been building protocol with mental [strength]. I always say that we all have greatness in us, but greatness is only determined by service, so I wake up every day trying to be of service.

“To teach other men how to keep pushing forward, and to help other men improve their mindset because mental health is an essential mission of mine. Another important mission is to get in the ring and do what I was meant to do. To all my fans and supporters and those who never left my side, I love you all so much, and thank you so much. Because no matter how many losses and how many challenges, no matter how many times life hits you and knocks you down, you better get back up and keep pushing forward. That’s the strength of mindset,” Wilder said
