Wayne Rooney's Ex-Teammate Joins Misfits

Wayne Rooney’s ex-team mate Danny Simpson will make his boxing debut against YouTuber Danny Aarons.

Simpson did not hit the heights during his time at Manchester United. However, he made history when he joined Leicester City Football Club. He won the league title in the 2015-16 season as the club pulled off one of the biggest championship-winning team performances ever. Simpson retired from professional football in July, as he prepares for his coaching badges. He will box Aarons on August 31 at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. Aaron was meant to box TikToker Brandon Beavis, but now Simpson will take his place.

Simpson’s Debut

“So It’s Official. I’ll be making my boxing debut on the 31st of August in Dublin on the @misfitsboxing card. Excited for fight night. Let’s have some fun,” Simpson

“Fighting a premier league winner wasn’t on my 2024 bingo card but here we are,” Aarons

Simpson is not the only ex-Manchester United footballer linked with boxing fights. The same can be said for Wayne Rooney. Rooney retired with a glittering career, having won the Premier League and Champions League. He became the club’s top scorer with 251 goals, surpassing club legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

His career since his playing career has not gone down well. He was infamously sacked from his job as Birmingham City manager, and he left them in the relegation places. He was linked with a boxing fight with KSI, as the latter leaked text messages showing that Rooney was serious.

“I hope he doesn’t get annoyed that I said this, but Wayne Rooney hit me up being like, ‘oh, we should fight,’ and I said no I just don’t want to do that. [And] I don’t know, if Wayne Rooney is down of course I think it would be good to have him in the [influencer boxing] space. I know Wayne Bridge is another person that’s been interested in the [influencer boxing] space,” KSI stated

“Alright, I’ve got it, 5th of December, 2022 at 3.50am. (Rooney text), ‘Hi mate, what you think on me and you having a boxing fight. I think we could generate a lot of money. You up for it.’ “No question mark, just full stop. He’s not asking! (The text continues), ‘We could sell out stadium with right support and both make good money,” KSI said

Rooney’s Skills

Rooney’s previous boxing skills did not go down well. He sparred with his former teammate Phil Bardsley. The following clip shows Rooney hitting the floor after being hit with a jab. But that did not stop Eddie Hearn from being interested in making that fight. He suggested Jake Paul as a credible opponent. The Problem Child, however, has improved since these initial rumors. He has taken his record to 10-0-1, having beaten Mike Perry in his last fight. He has also beaten two pro boxers, Andre August and Ryan Bourland. While he lost to Tommy Fury, it was a split decision loss. Hearn was open to making the Rooney fight happen.

“He won’t mind me saying but after every big fight, especially with a YouTuber, sometimes Rooney will fire me a message. That was in the living room after about eight bottles of red. Wayne Rooney had a very limited amateur pedigree but could still fight. Wayne Rooney training, and I said to him, ‘Imagine the shape you could get in as well. You’ll get right back into shape.’ Against Jake Paul at Old Trafford,” Hearn said
