In today’s boxing news, Frank Warren has talked up the potential for more big fights in Saudi Arabia as Tyson Fury prepares to face Francis Ngannou on October 28th, 2023.
The crossover fight will form part of the Riyadh Season in a fight where the social media numbers have shown a huge interest. Reports indicate that one such trailer for the fight went over 100 million views.
This was despite the fact that there was an initial criticism of the fight. This was on the grounds that an undisputed fight with Oleksandr Usyk could have been made instead.
However, since the Ngannou fight was announced, Fury and Usyk have agreed a deal for the biggest fight in boxing. And by the looks of it, this could be the start of many more big bouts to come.
Warren On Saudi
“The good news for the fans that can’t get to Saudi, is that they can watch them on prime time in the UK. They’re not going to sit up until four or five o’clock in the morning. So that’s the great news. And the real great news is that the fights are being made. They’re happening. This I hope will be the first of many, many big events that are going on over there, which I know that it will be. So, this is fabulous. It’s fabulous for boxing. Things are happening. There’s a real buzz about things now,” Warren
Queensbury Promotions has managed to align itself with the General Entertainment Authority, who have now become the main player in making fights in Saudi Arabia.
And as part of that process, Skills Challenge Entertainment are no longer at the focal point of making Saudi fights. That was the primary reason for Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder not happening.
And given that Eddie Hearn had forged links with Skills Challenge Entertainment, that has left the Matchroom Boxing promoter playing second fiddle in Saudi.
“It’s happening if you’re over this side. On the other side, they’re not happening,” Warren
Warren On Hearn
In response, Warren has hit out at Hearn after the latter appeared to suggest that the Queensbury promoter had abandoned Daniel Dubois following his appeal to the WBA to overturn his loss to Usyk.
The Brit had put the Ukrainian down in the fifth round only for it to be declared a low blow. That resulted in Usyk having more than three minutes to recover.
That ultimately played a part moving forward, as Dubois was stopped in the ninth round. Although Warren did confirm that Dubois had appealed, Hearn has reportedly accused the promoter of not backing his man.
“I mean we’ve written to the WBA today, telling them that we want to. He’s [Hearn] always got some snide comment to make. All he needs to do is worry about how he’s going to deliver to ‘AJ’. What’s he going to deliver to ‘AJ’ and the fans, that’s all. Stop worrying about what we’re doing,” Warren
