Usyk Speaks Out After Being Arrested At Krakow Airport – ‘Thank God’
Oleksandr Usyk has spoken out after he was arrested at Krakow Airport in Poland.
The Undisputed Heavyweight Champion was on his way to the UK to watch Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois, which takes place on Saturday. But when he was at the airport, the boxer was detained for questioning. The following clip shows him being handcuffed and going with the authorities for questioning.
It is not clear why the authorities apprehended Usyk. But he will attend Joshua vs. Dubois on the weekend, as he could face the winner for undisputed provided he beats Tyson Fury on December 21 in their rematch. Now that the dust has settled somewhat, Usyk has spoken out.
Usyk Speaks Out
“Dear friends, a misunderstanding took place. It was quickly resolved. Thanks to all who got concerned. Thanks to Ukrainian diplomats for the efficient support. And respect to Polish Police for conducting their obligations with no regards to height, weight, reach and regalia. Thanks God to everything,” Usyk said
Usyk’s main focus will be on beating Fury in their rematch. The Ukrainian won the first fight via a split decision to become undisputed in two weight classes. He dominated the Gypsy King, whose only success came in the middle rounds. He was about to knock Fury out in round nine, but the referee imposed a standing eight count.
Usyk’s team have promised to stop Fury in the rematch, while the Gypsy King is confident that he can get a win, feeling he had done enough to win the first fight. There is speculation that his next fight could be his last in boxing, as he has teased a potential crossover fight in BKFC.
Zelenskyy Responds
Meanwhile, he has also left the door open for a third Joshua fight if he beats Dubois. Usyk’s popularity has been growing, making him more of a bigger commercial star, which will aid him in negotiations. While the incident was not ideal, it has gotten people talking, with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also having his say.
“I spoke with Oleksandr Usyk on the phone after he was detained, I was disappointed by this attitude towards our citizen and champion. I instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, and the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, to immediately look into all the details of the incident at Kraków airport. Now, everything is fine, our champion has been released, and he is no longer being detained. In the photo, he is with our Consul General in Kraków right after being released,” Zelenskyy stated
Should Usyk win the rematch, he will go down as one of the best of all time. Two wins over Joshua, and then Fury could cap off a career where he has beaten the best, mostly in their backyard. Given that he was 40 pounds lighter and had a seven-inch reach disadvantage against Fury, the win was all the more memorable. The experience from the first fight will stand him in good stead to pull that off again.
