Umar Nurmagomedov's Hand Injury Fears; Could Be Out For Six Months

Umar Nurmagomedov has spoken out following his first UFC loss, as he could be out for six months with a hand injury.

Nurmagomedov lost a unanimous decision against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311 as the latter defended his UFC Bantamweight Title. Nurmagomedov started the fight well, landing some eye-catching shots. However, he began to tire from round three onwards as Merab increased the pace. The defeat was compounded after Umar revealed he broke his hand in the first round. The injury means he will be out for some time, ruling out an immediate rematch. Reports indicate that could be for six months. He will also have to refocus, having experienced his first loss. His cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov talked Umar up as a future champion. That is still possible, as Umar remained optimistic he would bounce back to become an eventual champion.

Umar’s Injury

“There are no excuses. InshaAllah, I will become the champion. The rest is not important. Praise Allah in any situation. And I don’t think I’ve lost this battle if even the whole world will convince me otherwise. Deal with the injuries and get back on track,” Nurmagomedov said

In contrast, Merab has now disclosed the injury he suffered during camp. In his post-fight comments, he said he was dealing with a back issue. However, the following footage also show a leg injury. The images of the leg show heavy bleeding, something Merab overcame. His coach, John Wood, also said he could not use the leg during the camp.

Merab’s Struggles

Dvalishvili has shown remarkable mental strength. He also overcame a cut before the Sean O’Malley fight. He raised controversy when he shared a picture of the cut, which required stitches. There were suggestions that he was giving O’Malley extra ammunition and a game plan to target the cut. But he proved those doubters wrong, beating Sean in a one-sided unanimous decision. But before the fight, Dana White slammed him for sharing the cut.

“The whole world knows about Merab’s cut. He posted it. I mean, our guys are so dumb it’s next level, unbelievable. All the stuff that I talk about boxing, what I will give boxing is when something happens in a camp – man, let me tell you what. It does not leak. Our guys can’t wait to throw it up on social media. It’s just – small cut, it’s no big deal. But obviously needed to be posted…And why the [hell] would you want [O’Malley] to know that? It is next-level stupid. Some of these guys are so stupid it’s – it’s mind-boggling. It’s unbelievable,” White said

Merab’s disclosure will shut down any excuses that may come from Umar’s camp since they were both dealing with injuries. In truth, Nurmagomedov simply looked exhausted from round three onwards. Merab continued to change the levels and secure more knockdowns, as Umar could not keep up. Although he will want to put that loss right, there is no guarantee that Umar will get the rematch. The injury will also not do him any favors.
